It amazes me that people who claim to love Prince can't understand what a big deal it is that a new generation of singers is interpreting his catalog. I think all of them were good. Of course, none of them is Prince, but I think that is the true test of a song: seeing others breathe new life into it. I really enjoyed the rendition of "Jungle Love." Also, the young lady singing "How Come U Don't Call Me" was phenomenal. I tell you, some Prince purists are such awful snobs.

I get what you are saying. But I wish they did it better..it feels like a missed opportunity in a way. Hear me out. ONly half the songs were Prince on that show, they didn't venture out past the 80's and didn't do any deep cuts. Its like throwing Prince a bone but not the whole piece of chicken. Maybe I am greedy but I don't think you are going to hook new fans by rehashing the same stuff. Can you imagine how young audiences would react to hard version of Endorphinemachine. Hooking casual fans isn't really what we want is it. Don't we want to hook some of the kind of fans the BEatles have. I know 12 year olds who love the BEatles because their parents exposed them to 5-10 beatles albums. Skimming the surface makes Prince's stuff look somewhat weak and limited to the 80's. It was a nice gesture but I think he deserves more.

As much as a non-playing fan might wish... nope. We might keep it alive until we die, but something else will be needed for it to go beyond that. Fans who are musicians will keep it alive. Not necessarily by covering songs (though that will help), but by being inspired by him and referring to him. Keeping him part of the music discussion. A 40-something fan isn't inspiring anyone to go out and find new-to-them music. But someone singing something hot, and dropping a reference or an allusion to some obscure track might do so.

I scanned the show just to hear the Prince tunes. My assessment on first listen (there will be no second!)

Five star rating

Kiss - cool arrangement, her voice is nice; outfit was hot (Vanity would have slayed a MFer for those purple knee-high boots) * * * (she was eliminated)

I Would Die 4 U - boy, stop. really bad, I was almost embarrassed for him. *

Nothing Compares 2 U - felt disjointed, she has a good voice but it wasn’t cohesive * *

Jungle Love - I didn’t mind the rock edge to it, dude’s got a good voice; hate that they didn’t give Jesse credit as writer * * *

How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore - overdone from the first line, it was like Janis Joplin trying to sing it in a bad way *

Manic Monday - she’s probably a hoot at a party, she forgot some lyrics, but she recovered; fun arrangement but she needs to temper her voice just a tad; I like her personal style & quirkiness * * * (she was eliminated)

When Doves Cry - nope, I hate his over-country-ized voice, the drama of the arrangement, just no. *

The guy Cade, who did “Jungle Love”, looks a bit like Tommy Barbarella

I found it to be a bit karaoke. I found the covers boring. I like Chris Cornell's NC2U cover, or even Bruce the Boss's cover of Purple Rain (Those are examples of doing it right.)

I hear ya. But many of you folks loved PRince because you grew up with him and purchased his albums. These kids aren't doing this. Plus, aspiring artists should delve deeper. They should be students of music. If American Idol has rights to all of his music, they should have given these folks time to dig a bit deeper if the producers didn't want to do it themselves. Plus, if it is Prince night. It should be all Prince music.

They're kids, really, and not Prince fans--they're not going to pick obscure songs, even if they were presented with a full list of everything on Princevault, because they're not going to KNOW any of the obscure songs. I dont' see it that way at all. Kids either don't know his music or have limited exposure to his music. Most of them need some guidance through his music. . I recently told a 12 year old about When Doves Cry. We were talking about 80's music. I told him I like Prince but he probably doesn't know who he is. The kid then said he did and mentioned Let's Go Crazy and Purple Rain. i said my favorite song from that album was When Doves Cry. He said he didn't know it. Another girl I work is a MJ fan and she once asked a 25 year old student teacher who he liked Better MJ or Prince. He said if it werent for When Doves Cry, he would pick MJ overall but that When Doves Cry was a real "banger". I kept my mouth shut but I wanted to say "you actually think When Doves Cry is his only "banger"..oh how little you know"...LOL.

I don't get all this talk about covers songs exposing people to Prince's music. I haven't seen that work out for any artist. People tend to like a cover because they liked the artist covering the song. A song's origin for most listeners mean nothing. Simply dropping Prince's original version of NC2U with some rehearsal footage probably did more to expose new people to his music than anyone covering his songs.

That's kind of exactly my point: Any exposure, can still pique the interest of new fans. I realize in this case a lot of people were not feeling these particular performances, but they tried to pay homage, that's more than a lot can say, especially if they weren't previously Prince fans. Here, they learned about him through learning their song, and so did the audience and viewers. I just don't understand the SEETHING negativity that is floating around following this 'out there' - aka Prince FB pages. People are literally RANTING (stark raving at times) about it. Prince appeared on American Idol, so I feel he WOULD have supported this way to showcase his music since he has before. People need to chhhiiillllllll

At first I was like, 'y'all need to stop fucking with Prince's music' but it was ok.

I liked how Lionel Richie in his praise went out of his way to praise and highlight Sheila E, it was only right.

I did not mind country WDC, though some lines were mediocre in delivery.

How Come U Don't call me anymore was a'right, but it was missing Prince. You take the Prince out of Prince music and it is like taking the booze out of your cocktail (bad analogy), ok its like taking the holy spirit out of your church. It is like that Missy Elliot work it video Prince in your Purple Rain movie.

It's like Prince said in 3 chains of gold. To badly paraphrase Last night I wanted a cup of coffee, but I didn't have any cream, last night I wanted some inspiration but I didn't have any dreams.

You can't do Prince without Prince, sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I miss Prince, I want Prince. Prince I don't got.

Nah they just were awful. These singing shows have run their course, just not good anymore.

It was pretty bad.
