So it won’t be an autobiography but a biography Prince approved? Paisley Park is in your heart

"Newberg said Prince was committed to the book project and working with author Dan Piepenbring. Prince delivered about 50 handwritten manuscript pages before his death. Newberg said the long-awaited book is expected to be published just in time for the holiday season and may include reproductions of Prince’s longhand pages."-- http://variety.com/2018/b...83341/amp/ "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Maybe Prince enlisted Dan Piepenbring originally as a ghost writer?

. even most autobiogrpahies with no coauthor listed have someone else working with the person just to clean it up a bit. judging by this quote: "Prince delivered about 50 handwritten manuscript pages before his death" it sounds like it was heading towards being an autobiography, just he wasnt around to finish it.

Did they find more pages he hadn't delivered, or did they turn 50 pages into a book?

Dan Piepenbring was Prince's editor on this book; he wasn't the ghostwriter. Prince himself mentioned him when he announced the memoir: "“My brother Dan”—Dan Piepenbring of the Paris Review—“is helping with it. He’s a good critic. That’s what I need. Not a yes man.”

Wow.I remember someone here posting a link to a blog by someone who said they were a writer working on a book with him. They posted some of what they said was from a conversation they had with him right before he passed. Thanks for sharing.

It would be poetic justice for Prince's memoir to have some unflattering things written about the countless associates who have came out like vultures to capitalize on Prince's death with their books about Prince. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

Thanks for that! I did not know he mentioned him. I'm glad he was looking for objectivity in the editor and he chose him himself. It should be good, I can't wait.

That's for sure. Maybe it will put them in their place.

Realistically, the editor was probably brought on board by the publisher (I'm sure Prince had approval). But having a strong editor would definitely have helped shape the book. I'm disappointed that the full book wasn't able to happen but I do hope to see what he had written -- and finger's crossed it was more than 50 pages.

Unless there were additional pages to the original manuscript and/or voice recordings waiting to be transcribed, the writer will have to pad the book with material from other sources so it may turn out to be more of a biography. [Edited 4/11/18 8:13am] I guess that’s my question. I’m assuming there wasn’t a final book for Prince to sign off on. So what is the stuff he didn’t sign off on? Just filler from other sources? Not sure I’m interested in that. Paisley Park is in your heart

Cool news. “Brother Dan” looks like a great choice based on what I’ve read.

ASsuming there are 50 pages of material he wrote, I'm definitely interested in that. If they pad it with other stuff (picutres, essays from other people or whatever) -- even if that stuff is same-old it won't stop me from reading it just for those Prince-penned parts.

Depends what the 50 pages are and how complete it is. Paisley Park is in your heart

I'll buy for those 50 pages, regardless of the additional content and 'padding'. 50 pages of biographical information in Prince's own words is still unprecedented and even more so now he is no longer here to complete the project.

I'm really ONLY interested in the 50 handwritten pages (if that's all there is). But 50 handwritten pages are more like 25 when they are typed... And I have zero interest in filler. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

There was that kurt cobain book that came out recently compiling his sketches, journal entries etc. That would be sort of interesting if they could add stuff like that to this book -- not necessarily journal entries, but Prince was known to sketch and draw. Or like pages from scripts that he hand-annotated, contact sheets he edited -- basically things in his own hand. Could be interesting.

Chalk up another victory for Abigail, she mentioned back in 2016 that Esther had the manuscript and that it would eventually be released. [Edited 4/11/18 10:20am] "You always get the dream that you deserve, from what you value the most" -Prince 2013

This will be the one book on Prince that I will read. Can't wait!

Who is Esther? | |

Unless Prince's handwriting is quite smaller than anyone else's, 50 handwritten pages equals to about 25 typed pages and often 15 to 20. So, I'm not sure how much one can get from just 15 to 20 typed pages. Yet, since I know that the author of The Lyrics of Prince was contacted by and worked with Prince on a book in 2002 or so, I'm interested to see how much, if any of that, makes into this latest effort. From what I understand, the effort from 2002 was one chapter that included Prince's definition of art. However, that book, as I understand it, was not a autobiography as much as it was Prince's desire to write a book about the manner in which art, religion, and politics have always been essential in the lives of African Americans. You can read McInnis' very brief discussion of that project in part of his interview in the Oxford American: http://www.psychedelicliterature.com/oxfordamericaninterview.html
