The intro always reminded me a bit of Imagine by John Lennon.

Although it's nice, I hate to say it but always felt he made the right decision giving it to Sinead, she added so much more poignancy and emotional impact to it I felt. I think he was good at knowing when to give his stuff away to someone that could make it even better (think Chaka and her far superior version of I Feel 4 U).

However, after 2 years I would have hoped we'd have got something more than this to be released (especailly as many of us have heard a very similar version already on bootleg).

Completely disagree; love this newly discovered original, it's now the best version. Sinead's version is too short and the music plodding. Love Chaka's dance oriented I Feel 4 U, but love Prince's sweet soulful version even more

That's always been my main issue with it. It's clearly a great song, but marred by a pretty linear arrangement. Prince's vocal is WAY more emotional too...

I won't slam Sinead's version (in most ways it's the best version of all) except one thing that always irked me, even before I knew it was a Prince-written song:

Where Sinead sings "All the flower that you planted mama . . ." --- that right there derails her version for me, and always has.

Plus, and someone posted earlier, the violins just drone on after a while.

They need to put this song in a major motion picture NOW. With the right movie this song could blow up. On You Tube and such it is definitely slowing down already.

That's true, but those questionable releases are also on Amazon and in my local record store. Not that it makes it ok.

I've been buying music from Qobuz for 3 years or so and the quality is good.

Yeah, Sinead's version of the Nothing Compares 2 U has not aged well. I always remembered it fondly, but having just gone back to hear it again after many years, there's really no reason for me to listen to it again. Just sounds like an average and fairly shallow cover of a song that misses much of its potential, that was done way better by the original artist. The 90s live version from Hits/B-Sides is also way better than Sinead's...

And as for I Feel For you, how anyone could think Chaka Khan's version is better than Prince's is beyond me. Mostly because I find Chaka's version unlistenably cheesy and dated. Even when it was new it sounded dated!

Dreadful version that doesn't even exist in my world. Prince's is the only version. It's no masterpiece, but it's a decent song.

The video is back folks. They must have paid off the estate.

My two bits..I am being completely honest here.. but I was never a fan of the song growing up. Its not because I dislike Sinead's talent. I have loved some of her songs... Has anyone heard the spectucular"You made me a thief of your heart" written by Bono and on the In the Name of the Father soundtrack. She is powerful singer (despite her less than stellar behavior). Sinead is very talented. But I never liked Nothing COmpares 2 u. It seemed corny to me even though I loved the raw emotion of the video. Something about the quirkiness of the lyrics (even down to the Prince signature spelling of words) and the normal everyday things he compares to her that didn't fit the overly dramatic gloomy mood of the piece. I truely believe she was singing about her dead mother and took the song to a place that the lyrics don't really support. And then I heard Prince's version and I feel in love with the song for the first time. I am totally in awe of it now. This sounds like Bias but its not in this case.(Manic Monday was better when the Bangles did it so I can admit that.) His arrangement and singing of this newly released version in particular seemed more in tune with the bluesy, melancholy, yet hopeful love song that the lyrics imply. There is an element of humor, irony, and self mocking to the song that her over emotive singing was missing. Sometimes less is definitely more. Nuance rather than hysterics. Warmth/longing rather than gloom/self pity. Much more believable and soulful because of its delicacy and its driving/bluesy sound...like a clock ticking while he can't stop thinking about his girl. By the way, the sax solo reminds me of BillyJoel's best soulful rock ballads. His version is as down-to-earth as the lyrics are and more believably touching as a result.
