Excerpt:

'In music’s never-ending search for authenticity and genius, few can match Prince’s talents as a musician or songwriter. As LIFE observed in 1992, his music “sprang from that fundamental basement playroom where all rock is gestated. He drew into a single voice the various sounds of James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Funkadelic, which he pressed into the thunder of Purple Rain. Prince remembered two basic facts about rock: It's dance music, and its signature emotion is longing, romantic yearning.”'

.

The caption for the above photo is wrong and I believe the above photo is from the Lovesexy era. Nonetheless, I appreciate any articles or galleries or other forms of publicity that show Prine love and respect!

I will, too. Use the TIME STAFF link and filter through the brands.
Or customer service.
But the article is pretty great itself.

So I wrote the following to Time's Customer Service:

.

Good afternoon,

I am writing regarding the article and gallery "I See Your Picture Wherever I Go: Prince in the LIFE Archive" (http://time.com/5215461/prince-photographs-life-archive/). I appreciate the loving and respectful publicity that this article and gallery gives Prince because I am a huge Prince fan. However, I noticed that the caption of the first photo in the gallery states "Prince on tour for Purple Rain, 1985." I believe that this caption is in error and that the photo is actually from Prince's Lovesexy era in 1988, not the Purple Rain era. Perhaps one of the editors could correct the caption. I would appreciate a response via email as well in order to confirm the receipt of this letter. My email is [redacted]@gmail.com. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Michelle [redacted]

I believe we could even go a bit further and say it's from the Dortmund Concert in 1988 that was shown on TV - this looks likes The Cross or Eye Wish U Heaven.

I may be wronf. Definitely 1988, though.

Thank you...Was there another photo taken from the same time of Prince, similar costume, cloud guitar, either backing into or walking out of dry-ice, sort of scowl on his face and the tagline was "If only I could get one person to understand"... or something like that...?

All the memories are folding into one!

He toured Lovesexy in Japan in early 1989. Didn't want to, but his accountants forced him because those shows were so lucrative they would pay his debts.

This tidbit is interesting given the fact that the issue/theme of debt becomes a minor but reoccurring theme throughout Prince's life. I would find it interesting to have accounts of how those times were navigated as it relates to the creation of art and touring that would be used, in part, to address the debt. To be clear, I'm not interested in some book or documentary that focuses on Prince being another dumbass entertainer who blows his money recklessly, but I would be interested in some article or documentary that explains which and how certain decisions were made because debt was an issue. Just the whole notion of accountants being able to force Prince to do something that he doesn't want to do, given what we know of his desire to do only what he wanted to do, seems interesting. And, I guess I'm also wondering if this aspect could, in some way, relate to or connect to the times when Prince's art was actually more "tight" and "well-crafted" when he had certain limits that he was forced to navigate. That is--making an album a single or double disc record because of company limits as opposed to making it a three or four disc record that he wanted. Again, I don't know if any of this connects, but I've often thought about these two issues since hearing Prince say that "Prince was a better editor," causing me to wonder what made his earlier self a "better editor"? Was it something innate to himself, or was it being forced to navigate the demands and limitations of the business? Yet, I must end by saying that I'm probably just as fond of overly elaborate and self-indulgent Prince as I am of stripped down and minimalist Prince. Still, I often wonder about all the aspects or elements that impacted the artistic decisions that he made.

Yes, he did. My comment was based on remembering seeing that picture just after/around the time of the Dortmund gig...that was September 88...wasn't it? I'm going to check...

...

...aye, Sept 9th 1988...hence my bold assertion that the picture was from 1988.

Also, and this again might be mother memory, didn't Prince change (alter) his hair and wardrobe for the Japan leg of the tour?

I may be wronf. Definitely 1988, though.

It does look like the outfit he wore at the Dortmund concert in 1988. However, I wasn't 100% sure if the photo in question was from that actual concert. While he rarely wore the same outfit twice, in the photo in question, we can only see the top. Since we can only see the top instead of the entire outfit, it would have taken more effort for me to identify the exact concert. Therefore, I figured that the Lovesexy era in 1988 was a sufficient descriptor. But I am curious to know exactly who the photographer was who shot that photo as well as where and when she/he took it.

Read above. Someone was kind enough to give some further details.
