Don't know why he did it. But he came on just before the final songs... and when he finished the look on his face said to me, "Hey finalists, good luck being better than that...."

Why? That question is not easy to answer, as it looks at first sight...

That performance is part of his legacy and everlasting genius that he was. I would dare to say, that performance summarizes one little history of popular entertainment. One could write a whole essay on that...but its just hard to comprehend something of that caliber.

The list of performance/interview TV shows that Prince DIDN'T appear on is far shorter than the list of those he did.

I agree that PR for "3121" was probably the main driver.

I still cringe when I see Ryan Sechrest saying, "That's it. No more special guests tonight. Definitely no one else is appearing. Wait! Who's that?" or whatever lame patter he had just before Prince came on.

The best thing that night was the Org thread about Prince rumored to be appearing; stuck in traffic; etc. That was awesome!

Free promo, by whatever instigation. He came in at the end, did his thing, and blazed the #%@! outta' there. Whatever. He probably didn't think much about it afterward.

Yeah, I think it was a mistake appearing with no band and performing with a backing track. I recall him looking a bit disheveled like he was taking a nap on the drive over. It was the first time I remember Prince not looking impeccably sharp in a performance. He also didn't rehearse with the tv crew so a lot of the camera angles and edits looked unprofessional. This is when American Idol was at its peak and he put on a less than stellar performance. I read comments on multiple sites and a number of young people didn't get what the was the big deal about Prince. I don't think it hurt him, but it didn't help either.

Yes it's pretty safe to say that he wasn't excited about doing it, but just was trying to promote his latest album. I'm sure he didn't like going on "The View" either or many other shows.
