The OP raises a good question. I suspect the call happened but not on the last night...and I'm sure it was just genreal bullshit (music industry, property etc.).

Obviously we're never going to have any idea what was said in that conversation, if it even took place at all. I got to say, posting on Facebook (since that's what Smith did) that "I just spoke with him last night" does make one curious--but it was probably nothing significant.
