Alternative Prince Timeline #1: 1985 / The Family

Alternative Prince Timeline #1: 1985 / The Family

.

The Family album was released. They played 1 concert and then Paul Peterson left. Afterwards Prince absorbed the Family band, and played many of the tunes in his set.

.

Imagine things played out differently: Imagine if Paul Peterson had left the project before the Family album was released, leaving Prince to take these tracks into consideration for Parade. Prince was in Nice filming Under the Cherry Moon, Parade wasn't out yet.

.

How do you think this would have materialised? Would it have been an album bigger than Around The World In A Day? Would it have helped the film not to bomb?

.

*Disclaimer: We have Paul Peterson to thank for leaving the Family because otherwise Eric Leeds wouldn't have joined the Revolution (aka the 'Counter Revolution'). I'm just ruminating a potentially critical moment in Prince history that could have had an effect on the rest of his career.

.

i can't see any of these songs fitting in with the other material on Parade.

Parade is actually my favorite Prince album. i can see a few songs on there
like "old friends 4 sale" or "all my dreams" (which originally were on it at a
certain stage in it's development). but the "family" songs, although they
are great songs and the whole album is just amazing, don't have that same
otherworldly uniqueness that parade as a whole has -for me anyway.

Do you think St. Paul regrets his move?

I cannot see that timeline. If that happened, we would have LESS music from the Purple camp to listen to in 2018.

..

The Alternative P Timeline I consider is if St Paul stayed and Prince was pushing for the promotion and the band progressed and was successful.

Not to mention that timeline being more sensible and UTCM being a film with his camp in it with certain song performances: IE High Fashion being performed by Christophers group of musicians the Family @ Mary Sharons Birthday party, along with Mia Bocca the night before by Christopher(Prince & the Revolution) possibly Jill Jones

..

this would also be a different movie, that I think Christopher being a struggling artist leading an underground France music scene, trying to make it big. Instead of the Gigolo thing.

Anotherloverholeinyohead doesn't 'fit' the general sound of Parade. Desire would arguably fit better as it's a bit less 'rocking', and bit more 'dreamy'. Parade as a whole is very eclectic sounding which is why feel like the tracklisting could swapped around in many ways.

i don't agree with that smile but hey, that's just me. i always have to remind myself that albums
like Parade (and a handful of my other all time favorite albums by other artists) mean different
things to different people and are also experienced very differently.

for instance, anotherloverholenyohead fits absolutely perfectly on parade for me and i can not
imagine anything else taking it's place or that song fitting on any other album smile

The jump from Kiss 2 AnotherLoverHoleinYoHead is magic

Parade could have held Alexis de Paris and it would have fit just as well with it's rock element

ALHIYH has a touch of arabic to it which makes it an exotic song for me, which fits into the exoticness of Parade

The whole first side of the Family album seems perfectly tailored for Cherry Moon. High Fashion talks about Mary being a stuck up little rich girl. Mutiny is Tricky and Christopher fighting. Screams Of Passion is about Mary and Christopher making love. NCTU is about Mary and Christopher breaking up and finally Desire is about them getting back together.

Honestly you put those songs on Parade and it tells the story so much better! I wish Prince would have taken those songs for himself.

I think certain albums show their strength when you can see it as a movie soundtrack.
I can see the whole Family album as music for the movie.
I can also see The Time as the stars of the movie about gigolos or guys trying to make it Uptown

Prince as a gigolo was not a sympathetic character enough for the movies ending.

.

The movie would have to be more dramatic than comedic for NCTU/Desire (in my opinion) because the UTCM just did not lend to that level of love. Actually let me backtrack. Desire played during the scene where Christopher takes Mary to his secret cove is nice.

..

LoL Mutiny Christopher 'you stick to the money I'll take care of the drawers' ...I forget the correct line... it is weird when that song was directed at St Paul because it is directed at a woman.

...

It would have been cool to hear the music into the lyrics from Old Friends 4 Sale when Christopher & Tricky parted after the fight: Old friends 4 sale, get em while their still hot, watch out, they'll kiss U, till they get what u got and ...

....

But Parade & the Family music could have easily been a part of the movie:High Fashion performed by the Family at Mary Sharons birthday part, YeS as background music(band performing) same with Mia Bocca(Prince or Jill Jones) Screams of Passion fits nice in that scene(especially if the scene was extended-with those deleted scenes)

Interesting, I've seen it since 1985, but just bringing it together.

When you look at the Family album photos, there seems to be a little competition between St Paul & Jerome for Susannah reminds me of Under the Cherry Moon
