Prince's letter to music critic, Tom Moon, after a critical review of his album 'Come'. September 1994.

"There is joy in repetition if one looks 4 joy. There can also be tension & discord. It's all up 2 the beholder. Every note—be it voice or instrument, every sound—be it human or inhuman is produced according 2 the way the producer feels. Many things contribute 2 that feeling. The climate, the time of day, the day itself. Dance music seems 2 find it's way into the studio during the weekend. The moon, the stars, everything plays a part. And there are no accidents. Tears are more believable when u can't hold them back. Here—music is made out of necessity. It's a fact a life. Just like breathing. The voice inside tells u when there is a song 2 be born. All children are born beautiful. How they are perceived by others may be another matter indeed. Much like an unborn child—A song is never conceived whole. That would be like taking dictation. Pleasure comes from not knowing what your baby's character will be like. Pleasure comes from the nurturing process. Whatever we are… whatever we make. On the days when Camille records, children are born without conscience or inhibition. It is important however 2 allow Camille his 'voice.' He hasn't been around lately. Positivity & negativity are always very close. The seeds we sow are the flowers that grow. Things are coming 2 a head. And not just 4 this generation. Believe that after it does there will be peace 4 a long time. Maybe not 4 everyone but 4 most. Hopefully more than not."

wow. just wow. worship everytime I think I couldn't love and respect this man more there emerges something like this. instead of calling that ignorant idiot anything of what he deserves to be called (and there's a lot), he writes a beautiful and so personal letter touched ... and some are still discussing wether he was proud of "come" or not ...

thx for this rap yes

the only love there is is the love we make heart

Tom Moon loved Prince and wrote a thoughtful tribute after his death:

I am not offended by the review and at the time of it's release not entirely in disgreement with it. That said, I just love Prince's reply. Thanks for sharing.

Oddly, Tom Moon gave New Power Soul four stars. I would not give that album four. Three maybe.

Come is great, always loved it. Four solid stars.

Loose sucks though.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

I agrees with U, except I love all songs on Come, and that includes "Loose"! wink cool

Such an amazing album, "Come", the title track, Space, Papa, Letitgo.. so many strong "pearls".

Only, the duet by Prince & Nona Gaye "Lovesign" should have been there as well - maybe instead of "Orgasm"..

I will give: 9/10 imho..... brilliant, I love the dark tone on this fine piece of "art"... heart

Interesting thought. Also, it's very interesting that he referred to Camille as a man.

Common knowledge.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I think the review was spot on. "Carreer derailment" is an excellent description of what Prince was doing to himself at that time and no one writing about him could have ignored that. Also, "soft porn pillow talk" sums up the album perfectly. And if you've ever heard the original version of the title track, you can only agree that the album version is cluttered with "banal lyrics and overwritten horn parts."
If Prince didn't like this, I can only say: the truth hurts.

Prince just wanted to say: critics are the worst - they understand nothing. Calling title track a 'soft porn' is not just a blunt stretch, its just misunderstanding what funk is all about.

Dark is a top twenty Prince song...which means it is a classic. Moon should’ve recognized.

I agree.I understand Prince's disagreement with Warners, but I think he was going about it the wrong way.He was doing alot of damage to his own career,at that point.

shocked So the OP of the tribute thread to the "Great New Power Soul Album" now is on record that at best it might deserve three stars. You've got a career in politics ahead of you, man lol .
