Awesome! Now we need a title for the album, because a Prince record titled "The Family" would be just... wrong. We still don't have P's version of River Run Dry, though The title of this version should “No strings attached” There may not be a Prince version of river run dry as he didn’t write it. If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it!

I don´t understand why he´d release many weaker songs on 90s or 00s albums when he had so many stronger songs in the vault. Sure, some of them probably would have sounded a bit dated or out of place but still.....even in the years I mentioned he wrote so many good songs that ended up in the vault or on other people´s albums instead of his own albums, all the while he was releasing songs such as Wedding Feast, My Medallion or Push It Up and I Like Funky Music etc. etc. Mayte´s album , at least in my opinion, contained 50% great songs such as However Much U Want, Ain´t No Place Like U etc., and then you have albums that some fans don´t even bother listening to such as the Bria Valente album that could´ve been received much more positively if it had been released as a Prince album....maybe not a full-fledged proper Prince album but something like an EP. Or those mediocre late 90s NPGM releases.....I mean I find greatness on every single Prince or NPG album, they all contain at least four or five songs in my opinion but I find it fascinating that he would rather release the stuff he released instead of spicing it up with some of the songs that ended up in the vault. And I would love to hear more of the really rare, unheard songs that he wrote between 1996-2016.
So many of the outtakes or songs he wrote for other artists are great songs and many of them deserved better than ending up on some obscure release by an obscure artist or in the vault. He truly had a very long run of being very, very inspired and gifted. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

What do people think of the track 'WHAT IF?'....it sounds very commercial and almost like it could be used in a James Bond movie....its very theatrical with the strings and harmony. Apparently when they went into Paisley Park Prince had a large collection of James Bond movies, perhaps he got his inspiration from them?

Yeah, the fake English accent in the beginning and the studdering of the lyrics added a unique quality. I get the feeling if WB didn't put limits on when Prince could realease music, he would've have been putting out albums every 2 to 3 months. Giving songs to to other artists was just his way of getting the music out.

I wonder about River Run Dry--there was a Bobby Z demo according to Duane's book, but he also has an entry for Prince's recording of the basic tracks for the Family (with Bobby on drums and Matt)--but he doesn't say anything about whether there was a guide vocal recorded or who performed the vocal if there was. At least, not that I saw when I went back and looked just now.
I always really liked River Run Dry, actually--even back when I wasn't completely sure what tracks were or were not Prince-related (I always assumed most if not all of the were, but back at release who could really be sure). I mean, it kind of stood out from the others, but I still liked it.

As someone who could never stand the production on Lovesexy, i really dig the first versions of some of those tracks. They don't sound as plastic and overproduced. [Edited 12/7/17 18:50pm]

I have to dig it out but I think this was his final version before Jill Jones dubbed it, I could be wrong tho. [Edited 12/7/17 23:08pm]

Well it might be slightly different, someone has put it out there as if it is new. Might be wrong. That's why I posted it.

it is different, looks like it's missing the W&L vocal overdubs

Another data point: there were 657 tracks on the "Work It 2.0" series (from 2008 or so), including 97 samples. So that's about 560 circulating outtakes in 2007-8. With everything that started circulating since then (more than 100 outtakes?), 700-750 sounds about right.
