Now that we have a full "Prince" version of the album, I've made appropriate changes to the cover! biggrin

lol lol lol

Awesome! Now we need a title for the album, because a Prince record titled "The Family" would be just... wrong.

We still don't have P's version of River Run Dry, though sad

The title of this version should “No strings attached”

There may not be a Prince version of river run dry as he didn’t write it.

huh? i've kept track of everything since te beginning and i've got about 750 songs in my
outtakes folder, and that's including a dozen versions of gangster glam and such lol or
4 takes on for you, half a dozen soulpsychodelicide's and lots of 'alternates' to released
songs. so i'm 'guessing' that actual unreleased tracks might be 500?

so where do you get the number 1000+ ? eek

Odd. I remember counting once over 800 and that was years ago. Now my folder has 1806 files. There are a lot of duplicates that I have to sort out (compare files, keep the best sounding), and quite a number of songs on early albums configs that were eventually released, but 1056 duplicates and official releases? I find it hard to believe eek

However if you're certain of your figure I can't challenge it until I've sorted out my folders, and I won't do it tonight.

750 songs/versions remains a ridiculously high figure anyway. We're spoiled but seriously, it's so many that it's already hard to believe. I don't know how many more there can be. I can't imagine too many but who knows... I certainly hope I'm wrong.

hmmm that is hard to believe, indeed. so the truth is most likely somewhere in the middle,
between our numbers. i guess i should do another count sometime soon and check if i haven't
labelled anything wrong etc.

but like you say, it's still one heck of a number of unreleased songs eek most artists don't
even write that many songs in a lifetime. prince had those just bumping around, beyond all
the stuff released.

and then came the mid to late 90s from which point we don't know more than about 5% of
vault material or shelved projects eek

oh those late carreer filed away albums drool

I don´t understand why he´d release many weaker songs on 90s or 00s albums when he had so many stronger songs in the vault. Sure, some of them probably would have sounded a bit dated or out of place but still.....even in the years I mentioned he wrote so many good songs that ended up in the vault or on other people´s albums instead of his own albums, all the while he was releasing songs such as Wedding Feast, My Medallion or Push It Up and I Like Funky Music etc. etc.

Mayte´s album , at least in my opinion, contained 50% great songs such as However Much U Want, Ain´t No Place Like U etc., and then you have albums that some fans don´t even bother listening to such as the Bria Valente album that could´ve been received much more positively if it had been released as a Prince album....maybe not a full-fledged proper Prince album but something like an EP.

Or those mediocre late 90s NPGM releases.....I mean I find greatness on every single Prince or NPG album, they all contain at least four or five songs in my opinion but I find it fascinating that he would rather release the stuff he released instead of spicing it up with some of the songs that ended up in the vault.

And I would love to hear more of the really rare, unheard songs that he wrote between 1996-2016.

So many of the outtakes or songs he wrote for other artists are great songs and many of them deserved better than ending up on some obscure release by an obscure artist or in the vault.

He truly had a very long run of being very, very inspired and gifted.

What do people think of the track 'WHAT IF?'....it sounds very commercial and almost like it could be used in a James Bond movie....its very theatrical with the strings and harmony. Apparently when they went into Paisley Park Prince had a large collection of James Bond movies, perhaps he got his inspiration from them?

I prefer the version which was released without the strings. But even then, it's only fine until Hannah starts singing and then it goes rapidly downhill. IMO, of course.

Very good point. I remember Prince saying he never gave WB the best stuff. But once he became free of his record contract, why didn't he go and do something with that stuff? He said in 1999 that he was one of the most bootlegged artists, and CB was meant to clean that up a bit. He could have easily cleaned it up a lot more and then some. It seems Prince made music to cure his boredom, rather than actually putting it out and people hearing it and paying him for it. The stories of tapes piling up and rotting away are heartbreaking and frustrating.

And the quality of his stuff from the aughts onward varied greatly. You know it's bad when "Graffiti Bridge" sounds more appealing than half of NewPowerSoul or all of Elixir.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

"Yo Mister" has become my favourite of the recent leaks. It's a grower. Apparently, it was recorded between "If I Was Your Girlfriend" and "Cosmic Day, and I think it has a lot of the same magic as those two tracks.

I think the Patti LaBelle version has been more or less ruined by the "updated", late-80s style production, but Prince's original has the charm of the SOTT sessions intact.

[Edited 12/7/17 0:13am]

Yeah, the fake English accent in the beginning and the studdering of the lyrics added a unique quality. I get the feeling if WB didn't put limits on when Prince could realease music, he would've have been putting out albums every 2 to 3 months. Giving songs to to other artists was just his way of getting the music out.

it is a bit weird, agreed. but who knows, he might have compiled 'albums', loosely, with those songs
on them? and thus felt like they were already on a project, despite being unreleased?

though he did often pull olders songs from the vault. and Rave being an example that was for sure
on an 'album', yet was still put on an official relesae. so who knows.

that new interview with morris, where he says prince let him listen to 5 purple rain era songs that
were better than purple rain and when he asked 'why don't you release this?!!' prince said that he
wanted to save it so his kids could release it. so there could be that as a reason for keeping good
tunes in the vault.

i'm glad he did put a lot of songs on protege or lesser know artist albums, because at least we got
to hear and enjoy them, be it in most cases less so than when they'd been released with prince on
vocals. but i'm still glad to have and enjoy those albums. agreed also that the bria album is a very
nice one and could have been at least 1/2 of a great prince album had he kept the songs himself.

as for why he would release stuff that we almost all agree is sub standard, who knows. he was at
least feeling it himself i guess lol some questions might still be answered in future, who knows.

I wonder about River Run Dry--there was a Bobby Z demo according to Duane's book, but he also has an entry for Prince's recording of the basic tracks for the Family (with Bobby on drums and Matt)--but he doesn't say anything about whether there was a guide vocal recorded or who performed the vocal if there was. At least, not that I saw when I went back and looked just now.

I always really liked River Run Dry, actually--even back when I wasn't completely sure what tracks were or were not Prince-related (I always assumed most if not all of the were, but back at release who could really be sure). I mean, it kind of stood out from the others, but I still liked it.

As someone who could never stand the production on Lovesexy, i really dig the first versions of some of those tracks. They don't sound as plastic and overproduced.

I also like the Patti Labelle tracks a lot better. They are cool songs, but just as with Mavis Staples, the songs just don't work with old ladies singing them.

Wasn't Prince's version released 20 years ago on that piano bootleg as 'there's no telling what I might do'?

I have to dig it out but I think this was his final version before Jill Jones dubbed it, I could be wrong tho.
Cosmic day seems to be on BFTP6 as 3 minutes so maybe that's the full version?

Another data point: there were 657 tracks on the "Work It 2.0" series (from 2008 or so), including 97 samples. So that's about 560 circulating outtakes in 2007-8. With everything that started circulating since then (more than 100 outtakes?), 700-750 sounds about right.

I'll be delighted if I'm wrong. It'll mean there are now three versions out there: the original leak without Wendy & Lisa; the official release with W&L; and this new one also without W&L. Can you say how else it differs from the original leak?
