Did anyone else know that Prince wrote I Would Die 4 U BEFORE he recorded 1999???

The sound check version from the early 1982 show blew my mind.
I had no idea that the Purple Yoda has this song already mostly
backed well before he even recorded 1999??

What’s funny is that it sounds like he was still trying to
figure out the bridge part (You're just a sinner I am told
Be your fire when you're cold...)

Does anyone know if he recorded an early studio version???

Duane and some elite traders may have known/know. It's new knowledge to everyone else.

I'd say if he rehearsed it the odds are that a studio version was made either solo earlier, or with the band afterwards, but it's just my 2 cents.

"Baby I'm A Star" is also an older song like that. I think it was Don Batts who commented in DMSR or another book that as a funky little piano piece he felt it was superior to the blown out version on Purple Rain. There is a rehearsal of it along with some other songs, just Prince and the piano, floating around somewhere. To me, it's unrecognizable as the same song, but people swear it's the same song. I forget if it's the same clip where he plays "Wednesday".

Even "Raspberry Beret" dates to 1982 or so.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Yeah, it does sound like he's still working on it. Which is the whole point of a rehearsal of course. He also seems to be messing with the lyrics, so I guess it was still work in progress at that time.

.

That it was previewed to Albert Magnoli suggests the existence of an earlier studio demo or take. Likewise, that it is being rehearsed here suggests that such a version may already have been recorded by late 1981 or early 1982.

.

While most of the essential elements are there, this rehearsal resonates with that 'Hard to Get '81'-ish/Controversy-tour 'Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?' grit, traded later for that towering Oberheim wall of sound on the album.

.

Haven't heard this version, but that's not the bridge, it's Verse 3.

.

.

The bridge is the instrumental part before Verse 3

It's apparently been on PrinceVault since at least 2015, if the history of the "I Would Die 4 U" page is correct. I cannot understand how this was completely missed by just about everybody. This is a massive discovery and yet nobody bothered to announce it until now, when a recording of this soundcheck / rehearsal leaked.

Because PrinceVault is biased?

The info was posted years ago on princeinfo.net. But like a lot of other info posted on that site, it was ignored. Other songs that will soon emerge was also ignored. PrinceVault is a great resource but clearly biased against some info they didn't like the sources of.

Or maybe they just wanted to confirm they had the correct info

they could have felt where they got it from wasn't sourced well enough

was it really written before 1999 or around the same time?

Back then by the end of an album/era tour the next albums music was already being recorded or ready for release

I don't believe it's about "liking" sources, but giving them credibility. I appreciate this approach, it prevents them from being filled with nonsense and fake infos.

.

IDK for how long it's been there but IWD4U is mentionned as having been played on that show's soundcheck, on the show's entry.

Damn, u're right: "The song dated back to at least 18 months earlier when it was tried out in soundcheck during a Controversy Tour show."

I was looking 4 "1982", which is y I couldn't find it while skimming falloff

It's funny because we tend to associate P songs with when they came out, not when they were written or originally recorded.

Strange Relationship being recorded in early 1983 is another that comes to mind.

right

some songs were recorded not long after release,

some a work in progress

But I wonder if IWD4U was actually 'recorded' maybe an incomplete piano/demo version. But not the actual song we hear in 1983 @ First Avenue

New Position was a late 82 demo as well, and Lisa pulled it up to rework it

Well, the basic tracking of the song "1999" took place July through August of 1982, and the rehearsal of "I Would Die 4 U" is from a San Francisco Civic Auditorium soundcheck from February 15, 1982, so it most likely was fully written before he recorded the song 1999.

He was walking around during the 1999 tour with a notebook and I am sure songs were being written and he had started working on The Second Coming movie which had some sort of story line. No surprise he had a surplus of music.

I suppose it's just a bit mad that he had a song as strong as I Would Die 4 U and more or less fully formed that he left off the 1999 album. I guess it fits in with the sound of some of 1999 like Lets Pretend We're Married but it's hard not to think of it being a few steps ahead of them, especially lyrically - it's so less carnal than those songs. Fascinating to wonder what was going on his mind back then anyway.

Absolutely, it’s impossible to tell what year a song was originally penned. For example Sexy MF could’ve been written for Parade and for all we know there could be an older 85/86 sounding version sitting there in the vault. “We’re all alone in the villa on the Riviera, that’s in France on the south side in case you care”.

I don't think so. The raps and the use of the word motherfucker makes it very much inspired by hip hop. He said to Spike Lee in Interview magazine that "Sexy MF came when I had the Glam Slam disco (...) When you hear something constantly, you can get swayed by the current. I was swayed by hip hop at the time."

Yeah, that struck me too. He didn't really write "spiritual" songs yet in those years.
