Off the top my head (that's a phrase not an unreleased song I stole from the vault)

Just my imagination
Another Love
Miss You (Rolling Stones)
Red House ( the SOTT era version he called peach house)
Villanova Junction

I pick Villanova Junction - a majestic cover of a Hendrix track that outdid the original and the Steve Vai song that was based on this song from Hendrix in Woodstock. (Not a claim I make lightly.)

It was interesting Susan Rogers comment about Prince not being as funky as Sly Stone. As much as I love Sly Stone and Prince, and as much as Prince loved Sly Stone and Prince, he never seemed to do definitive covers or to put his own stamp on Sly Stone songs IMHO.

Almost put that one down myself. His segue with All Along the Watchtower, certainly puts some impassioned soul into the Foo Fighters, a band I saw live (free tickets) but still felt rang hollow. It was strange thinking this band is good, but I am getting nothing of substance from them.

A Case of You

I Can't Make You Love Me (Though curiously, not my favourite cover of the song)

Not a huge fan of Prince covering songs on record to be honest. While he did excellent renditions of many great songs LIVE..... my main joy when it came to studio work was always hearing new songs written by the man himself.

When I saw the post title, I immediately thought of "Crimson & Clover"

His voice is so soothing during this cover song. Some of you might agree nod

My guess is that you are referring to his Super Bowl performance, which was a totally badass performance. I just re-watched the video of him performing "The Best of Me" and he absolutely SLAYS the guitar...in the rain while wearing the headwrap and heels. The entire NPG is off the chain...The Twinz pull off their choreography flawlessly, the musicians are completely in sync, and Shelby J's vocals are fabulous. Oh, and his scream is perfect.

Hi Leecaldon,

This version is from Le new Morning 87. I think it is called Red House on the record. It is more jazzy with swinging drums, and guitar lines and Eric Leeds taking a horn solo. I like it as I can't recall a similar version (I am not a bootleg authority, but they sure are easier to come by than they used to be for me)

I love the Hendrix song Redhouse. I feel Prince's version on the Hendrix tribute album didn't quite nail it (I think it may have been dubbed Purple House). I enjoyed the version on Rave, and would like to hear the other times he may have done it.

Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain", renamed as "Shadows & Chain".

"What'd I Say" by Ray Charles.

Both fantastic live performances IMO.

Forgot about his cover of the Chain. That cover is transformative and beats the original IMHO. So much passion in his delivery. And his swagger and demeanor when performing it is everything. Yes!

How could I forget "Another Love"!? A great one for sure. Also "What if". Two great covers that late in his career seem to capture "Prince" more than his own songs.

I know it's been said before and I know I am sounding churlish but - when there's unreleased songs like All My Dreams, In A Large Room With No Light, etc, then there shouldn't be cover songs to discuss!

For some reason, this is the biggest "thing" about Prince that irks me. Don't know why...

That said, I really liked When Will We Be Paid? and the rehearsal of Summertime makes me smile.
