I often show the Hopfarm concert (Kent, UK) soundcheck version of this song to demonstrate the genius that is Prince Watching him perform the song AND give directions to the sound guys at the same time is a great moment

I'd never heard, or even heard of, this tune before he played it live at Hop Farm in 2011 for his sound check. It felt incredible as both an opening track AND a genuine technical shakedown. The previous acts at the festival had suffered from horrible sound quality. I don't know what the overlap in technology was between acts, but the impression given was that Prince leapt onto stage and, in a five minute jam that all previous acts were incapable of even playing, one by one corrected all the sound glitches by bossing shit around and telling the desk how it's supposed to be.
Awe inspiring on multiple levels. As a result, I love the song, but I bet that a studio version would sound contrived and too clean. It felt like it was designed with this specific purpose in mind. Introduce the band. Fix the sound. Start the show! [Edited 10/15/17 5:03am]

His take on Dance to the Music / The Jam. And it doesn't suffer by comparison.
Would love to hear a studio version of this.
