Without even reading the docs, I know that the restoration/digitization process is a necessary and good thing. I have never questioned that. I just wish it was not happening in California. —Well the entertainment industry is based in California and movie studios trust Iron Mountain do I am sure it will be fine.

Some people might think my comments will constitute blasphemy, but here goes: Minnesota is not the entertainment capital of the world. It does not have the facilities to handle Prince's work product. I don't care that he lived there. I don't care that Paisley Park has a mythic status among the hardcore fans. Prince did not maintain his work product in the most up-to-date manner; who knows what was lost in the non-climate controlled, non-secure space or spaces at Paisley Park? Comerica has to protect the estate and make money for it. Period. End of story. If you think this is terrible - moving to Iron Mountain - what do you think is going to happen to the memorabilia he left behind? Who or what is going to maintain all of that for 10, 20, 30 or more years? Who or what is going to pay the bills? This is only the beginning. Do you really think his family is going to keep a hundred plus guitars, dozens of drum kits, thousands of pairs of shoes, clothing, etc., in storage forever? The reality is they won't be able to afford it, let alone agree on how to handle it. So they may sell some of it, or donate it to the Smithsonian or a local museum, or have a charity auction to raise funds for whatever cause they choose. Who knows? Iron Mountain is a good start in my opinion, but don't be surprised at what is coming down the road next.

ISaidLifeIsJustAGame said: Please read the Affidavit of Director of North America Operations for Iron Mountain that was filed at Court. After reading his Affidavit I know it was a very wise decision to move The Vault to Hollywood.
His Affidavit is only 4 pages long. Yep None of Iron Mountain’s Midwestern locations, including its facilities in Minneapolis, are specialized for entertainment assets like the Hollywood studio. Iron Mountain’s Minneapolis facilities, for example, are storage facilities commonly used for paper storage and not intended for storage of audio and video assets. They do not offer the same specialized storage conditions for entertainment assets or the unique audio/visual preservation and digitization capabilities as Iron Mountain’s Hollywood facility. The only other Iron Mountain locations with digital studios are located in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, however neither of these locations have a private vault that is in the same physical proximity to the digital studios as in Hollywood. For this reason, Iron Mountain did not propose, and would not have recommended or allowed, the storage of the Estate’s extremely valuable audio and video collection at any Minneapolis facility and recommended that they be stored at its premier facility in Hollywood. Agree but I think from what engineers who worked for Prince have said the vault was climate controlled at some point. Either the equiptment broke or they are speaking about tapes that were stored outside the vault in other areas of Paisley Park and in his storgae bins.
I doubt all of the material is damaged or the time and money would not have been spent to move it.
What we do know is that the family has a treasure trove of material that they are going to be able to make money off of for many generations if they do not fuck it up with foolishness or sell everything.

I read both affidavits. It confirmed that Iron Mountain has state of the art facilities. It also confirmed that they offer digitization services in NJ and PA; "however, neither of these locations have a private vault that is in the same physical proximity to the digital studios as in Hollywood."

. Whahahaha! Forgot about: Fukushima? Tchernobyl? Three mile island? Pompei? etc etc etc Those events were in fairly well inhabited areas while the people could have known of some risks involved. What the masses do is therefor no guarantee for the safety of anything in such situations. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... So what. If the big quake comes and knocks California into the Pacific we have more important things to worry about then some tapes. I honestly wonder sometimes about the thought process.

What if Prince had lived to be in his 80s or 90s, and after April 2016 never released another new song. What if he had decided to never release anything from the vault. What would you have done then? So really, if California sinks into the ocean, you will still have what he gave us to date. There are plenty of masterpieces from various artistic endeavors which have been lost over the centuries. We are poorer for having lost them, but we are richer for the artists having lived and shared with us their other treasures.

. The history of man does not take into account the souls of the masses but the various things from the mundane to the epic that remain preserved well enough. That has nothing to do with a thought process but the contents of the process.

So the end result is never mind the people and destruction of an earthquake just make sure the tapes are safe? I think if movie studios have their vaults in California and are good with it. I think they same will work for Prince.

No one said, "Never mind the people and destruction of an earthquake just make sure the tapes are safe." Some of us are just pointing out that because of the high likelihood of catastrophic natural disasters in California, perhaps another geographic location would have been better for the storage of the contents of Prince's Vault. That is all.

Such a big fuss over this, I just don't get it. You have no idea what you are missing and you may not be missing much at all, but some attempts are being made to deal with the vault material. Y'all have NO SAY in this, that is the bottom line. Whatever happens will STILL happen no matter how much fretting, bitching, or complaining is done about it. I think for allot of fans the Vault offers the chance to hear new Prince material, like he is still around making music, something after his death we sadly miss.
I am just cautious on the quality of allot of the music and the state of the recordings, allot has been made on the mythic nature of the vault and how there are thousands of amazing songs waiting to be released.

You make my point, Laura. Prince's Vault will be the last thing on the minds of first responders in the event The Big One hits. All the more reason it shouldn't be stored there in the first place with that probability on the horizon. Notice I said "that probability," not possibility.

http://variety.com/2017/b...202614267/ . Not shocking at all. It shows the lack of care for his 'children'. So as always, do not pay attention to what one says, but pay attention to what one does. `Evidence of water intrusion on walls and ceilings in the vault and elsewhere` points to lack of care for the building as well and thus lack of self-esteem, total mismanagement, etc. In this light I can understand the move to a different location and I do hope they can salvage most of the materials. He said on the view. 'that someone would put out the music but it will not be me" Was that not clear enough. Also nowhere in the papers does it say all of the music was damaged. It referenced music in offices and storage spaces. Remember many engineers said the vault was climate controlled but I bet no one paid that vault any mine in the year and a half since Prince has died. Climate control could have gone bad in that time alone.
Also from what I am reading leaking roofs from snow cover is not that unusual for Minnesota.
The media is taking one aspect out of 100s of pages of documents and blowing it up as usual. I know 20k worth of material was not hauled out and all was damaged.
