I have a conflictual relation with it.

Musically it is a fine jam and it is a nice Revolution live testimony (even with the overdubs).

The problem for me is that it was placed in SOTT.

It doesn't fit with all other songs in the album, it is for me the less important of all them (it is the only one I could switch with some outtake of the sessions, first of all JIR) and unfortunately it has the wrong choice mixing to let the crowd fade into the first notes of "Adore".

it's an OK song,but it just feels like filler on the SOTT album.When you consider all the outstanding songs from that period,you have to wonder why Prince chose to put this song on the album.

SOTT is a strange beast, it's a very solid album but actually most of the songs on their own are like just 'good to very good' but not of the level the press describe it.

SOTT - masterpiece (first and last time i use the word)
Sunshine - the most bizarre thing on the album. On itself it's not a 'great' song, yet it's the one i like and listen the most, apart from SOTT.
Housequake - overrated
The Cross - I can't stand it
Beautiful night - totally out of place
Adore - just beautiful
Hot Thing + It: nice, good, hot, whatever you want to call it, but not of the quality this album's supposed to be.

Play in the Sunshine - not sure "bizarre" is the way I'd describe that one! That's a great track! I find the weird Beatleish backing vocals on Forever In My Life to be a lot more bizarre than Sunshine. I'm with you a little though. To reference the Beatles again, it's kind of White Albumish. I find the White Album to be my favorite for sure, even if it's not technically "their best." The whole is greater than the sum of it's sprawling parts. SOTT is the same thing to me.

But Beautiful Night takes up too much real estate when there could have been a ton of other great tracks from that era. Crystal Ball, Dream Factory, ...shit there were some real winners that got left off in place of this long one.

I won't go as far as saying it's the equivelant of Revolution #9 though... It's a rare occasion where I don't just lift the needle and call it a day when Revolution #9 hits on the White Album. It should have just ended with Cry Baby Cry. I'll generally let Beautiful Night play out when it hits.

Ok:

On the album, Slow Love is perhaps a little weaker than the rest of these masterpiece songs,

However in the SOTT-film Slow Love is amazing, as well, a great sexxy ballad, when played "live".

The combination of “It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night” and “Six” (SOTT rehearsals etc) is one of the few things in life guaranteed to make me smile. It never fails.
