Prior to his candidacy, trump was mentioned often in music. Many rappers referenced him, usually positively.

In the "Money Don't Matter 2 Night" video without the clips of Prince and the NPG, there is a clip of the Trump Taj Mahal and Donald Trump walking through revolving doors from 1:38 to 1:40 in the video. This version of the video is on the official prince YouTube account.

Prince wrote that Donald Trump song in the early 80's. Back then, Trump was just some rich dude. Prince in 2015 was a supporter of Black Lives Matter and had said an interview that we were going to have a female president and that it was a good thing because women listen better and are better leaders because of it...(something to that effect.) Prince had some conservative leanings but he wasn't an idiot. HE thought for himself and even disagreed with the Iraq war rather early on. He would not have been a Trump supporter if he was living today. I am 99.9999% sure of that. At very least, he would have seen Trump as a racist (and probably thought of him that way the minute Trump questioned Obama's citizenship.)

Actually, it's on The Time's fourth album, "Pandemonium," from 1990, so in that case it would be the early '90s.... although, when it comes to Prince, who knows when songs were actually written?

But yes, Trump was not even close to being the president back then.

The song is referring to a woman who has expensive tastes.
The chorus is saying she needs a man with money like Donald Trump to keep her happy.

At the time, "Trump" was just a household nickname for billionaire.
The Donald always had a big inflated ego (the Trump Tower, etc.),
therefore it suits the Morris' character perfectly. Especially in Graffiti Bridge,
where he's all about the money.

Don't forget the humour of Prince. Do not take this song literally.
But it's ambiguous: it's also Jamie Starr's statement
that he's become part of the very restricted clubs of afro-american millionaires.

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose
Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams
