Did "Purple Rain" "borrow" a scene from "The Mack?" Just rewatching "The Mack" and there's a scene where Max Julien throws a guy into a garbage dumpster; it seems remarkably similar to the "Purple Rain" scene.
I've heard the commentaries on the Purple Rain Blu-Ray and such but I don't believe I ever heard this mentioned?

I have a hard time believing Mr. Magnoli has even seen "The Mack". However, there's no doubt in my mind that that scene was conceived by Prince/Morris & the Time's degenerate imaginations. Even it was inspired by "The Mack". |

Is throwing someone into a dumpster not uncommon in certain types of movies?
Like anything with a comical criminal or mafia element might have someone being thrown into a dumpster

-/Albert said he got the idea for throwing the girl in the trash from Morris Day who told him he really did have a girl thrown in a dumpster but I always thought Prince nicked a lot of stuff from the The Mack and Super Fly. [Edited 9/10/17 16:54pm] |

Maybe, possibly, in old silent films perhaps? I don't know.
But I think The Mack was probably required viewing for Mo' Day and the Time and they might've sort-of been inspired and/orimprovised it in the fashion of The Mack. |

Yes.
Incidentally I was friends with the guy who wrote SuperFly; we met at work; a very cool cat; haven't seen him for a while though. |

I always thought that was a really vulgar move. On the TV show EMPIRE, the dad threw his little boy in the trash can because he saw him dressing up in his mother's clothes. I wonder if they got that from Purple rain? Bad move. |

Yeah Prince was into a lot of those old black n white films. Gangster films too
Interesting possibility about the 'required viewing' But I don't know if the Time were 'Pimps' as much as players/gigolos.
I never read anything that said they had too watch films as a part of their 'themed image' for the stage or videos |

T.C. Ellis said that in N.Minneapolis a lot of old hustlers and pimps retire and that all grew up around these guys He said the gangster/pimp thing was a big influence on all of them growing up.You are underestimating the popularity of the Mack and Superfly back in the early 70s. Sorry Prince in the early 90s with the long hair was Ron O'Neal all day. |

"degenerate imaginations" ...well put --It was not their imaginations Albert said Morris told him he had a girl thrown in a dumpster. |
