Tom Jones - Kiss

Hi Guys,

Was driving home from work and Tom Jones version of Kiss was playing on the radio.

Its been a while since I listened to his version.

Would like to know if you guys like this version.

And if Prince commented on it or liked it...or if Tom Jones ever commented on Kiss and or Prince and or Princes death.

Cheers

Tom Jones said that, not too long after releasing it, he once met Prince at some VIP party and that he was so scared that Prince would scold him about the cover that he greeted him quickly and ran away to greet other people lol

It is the first version of kiss I heard.

It is inferior to the Prince, Mazaratti and Prince demo version amongst others.

That being said, at the time I still liked the song ok and enjoyed the "act your age momma, not your shoe size" lyrical sparring.

I have enjoyed it less, and less as time has progressed, and think the art of noise production is what makes it clunk. Tom Jones goes a little ham (like he is singing Delilah) on the song, and it must be said his sexy and Prince's sexy are not the same here. (love the Prince video and choreography with Wendy.)

Still grateful for it to have been an early taste of Prince for me.

This version and the Prince version is a good example of why Prince stands out as an artist and means so much to you and me (all props to David Z etc).

I still remember Daryl Somers (Australian TV show host) saying that it was better than Prince's version. eek

Art of Noise, are pioneers and legends on their own terrain.

I like the unique sound they created on the song. Blending portions of the extended version and their own previous songs.

Tom Jones' voice, was a good match and so the opposite of prince.

I liked it then and i still like it today, as well as most output from AON.

I fucking love it. I think it's one of the more inventive and different covers of a Prince song. Most covers either stick to the original or go so far off center that it's unrecognizable and crap. "Kiss" falls somewhere in the middle. The Art of Noise sound is obvious on it. The horn punches are fun.

yeahthat

True, it was an Art of Noise project (featuring TJ). I think TJ singing is OK on this song (he has a fab voice!), but the music makes it great!

ps. i kinf of dislike the world calling it tom jones' kiss.

although he sang it live for a while and AON asked him because of that.

it clearly is a AON project.

just like i dislike that you read all over the place, that prince wrote 'i feel for you' for Chaka khan.

But that might be another topic

ps2. AON, is great, Tom Jones is great and CK is also great biggrin

It's kinda okay. Must admit that TJ added something new to it, but it never reached the same level as the original. Impossible. The video for the song made me laugh because TJ was way too old for video like that one.

I love Tom as a personality, and have a lot of respect for his experience and the way in which he conducts himself, but he's always been a cabaret singer... not really a singer to take seriously, or ever actually listen to... He's a novelty singer, really.

As for his version of Kiss, it's as awful as should be expected. Overblown, drab and sexless. Embarrassing really. And has dated horribly. Like your drunk great uncle triying to get FUNKAY after Christmas dinner, in front of the whole family.

As for Art Of Noise.... well, for me, you can take away the Art Of and see what you're left with....

I remember an interview with TJ where they asked him what song of his he would like to see Prince cover... He replied, "What's New Pussycat?"

That would be... odd... eek

Tom Jones isn't a novelty, though he's marketed himself that way and it's easy to see why he's seen that way.

The man is one of the greatest singers ever. Period. Sick range, tone, sustain and control in his prime.

His cover of "Kiss" is cool. He adds his own charisma to it and it works.

I could actually see a fun Prince take on that song. It would connect with his scarlet pussy and la la la he he he, cat references.

When Tom Jones is good, he has soul and has had strong performances and hits that have charisma. When he is bad (to me) he verges on being the William Shatner of soul if that makes any sense.

Why not? He did "How Much Is That Doggy In The Window" in concert! Instead of a "hits medley", he could've done a "pets medley"! biggrin
