Prince & World Music Hi Guys,
Ive always had this thought even when P was alive that I hope he would make an album with world music influences...I know he did the song 7 with middle eastern sounds.
But I was thinking more along the lines of my favorite album of all time.
Graceland - Paul Simon
Like I always felt that as great as P was...in my opinion he was so far ahead of everyone that I would call him a once in a humankind artist. But there was always one questionmark in my mind.
Why no Graceland kinda album from P
Or like how George Harrison did concert for Bangladesh...
I would have loved Prince doing an album with indian influences...or even an african influences or since he was always boning hot latina women maybe a latin themed album
I dont know maybe im wrong

N.E.W.S may have a been an attempt at that with some Eastern motifs on East. Not sure if the rest does that. Then of course there's World sounds all over Around the World in a day. If Graceland came out today, Paul Simon would be accused of cultural appropriation.  If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it! | |

the 30 minute rehearsal version of "I Would Die 4 U" has obvious latin percussion accents (sheila E on drums/timbales)... "Blue Light" is a light attempt at carribean/reggae influence "In A Large Room With No Light" has some latin influence (sheila E drums)

Track 5 "Cutz" on Kamasutra sounds like he'd listened to some Balinese gamelan music - or Lou Harrison compositions. It's synthesized, not using real gamelan. | |

Yeah, I always wished he had broadened his horizon. One of the reasons I don't rate Prince later work as high as his 80s work is that he just kept going round in circles: rock: (Lotus/Plec), funk (NPS)/soul (AOA/HNR 2). All good, but we've heard it all before. He once talked about Ethiopian music. I would have loved it if he had done what Ry Cooder and Paul Simon did, but then in Ethiopia. Can't imagine how it would have sounded, but it would have been an adventure! | |
