Probably so, cos I never really got into all those spin off
albums and therefore seem to be missing out on some real
quintessential Prince music if I have to believe some of the
posts here.

So is Mia Bocca an instrumental or something?? And on who's
album was it released?

You've heard it Unless I'm wrong (someone please correct me if I am) the instrumental version plays in UTCM, between Mary Sharon's attempt @ "Planet Rock" and "New Position"...

It's also on Jill Jones' album but you're not missing much there IMO, her vocals are an acquired taste...

The first time I heard it, I loved it. I find it a very rousing song, that gets me bopping along!

I was just describing this to someone else the other day:


Mary gets off the drums, she & P lock eyes, as she's telling her friends to "keep an eye on him" Mia Bocca (instrumental) creeps in & plays throughout the next scene... Mary comes out in the killer dress, the friends tell her Chrissy & Tricky are "a couple of real pros", Mrs. Wellington gives her the tarot cards, she goes by the water (or whatever), throws the cards, Chrissy catches them, they chat, on & on until the Tricky/"New Position" dancing business...

Funny enough I've only ever seen UTCM one time and only had
half an eye on it. It spaced me out too much. The opening
scene of Prince at the piano kind of slingshot me into an
hysteric fit. The only thing other than that I can remember
was the closing scene.

I have to get me the video of that one of these days. I'm
sure I can appreciate it a lot more now than I did earlier.

i love the song, the video is great 2. The song was never a big hit overhere. But they used 2 play the video a lot.

Mia Bocca is essential, Szek. Recorded during the 1999 sessions, it was to be used in Purple Rain as a song Wendy sang to Lisa, dropped and then included as part of the Cherry Moon score and subsequently dubbed with vocals by Jill Jones and finally released in 1987. Just the fact that the recording survived through all those incarnations makes it a must hear! I always liked it.

Jill Jones album is by far the best 'associated artist' album IMO.

Mia Bocca is one of the most "underrated" songs in the protege collection. Jill Jones' strong and appealing delivery of the lyrics sets a "heady" pace. Jill is truly gifted. I agree, this song is essential to any Prince collection.

- maybe not "easily" ( I dig the Sheila E 87 album too) - her Paisley Park album is really a masterpiece imo The Family / Parade/ Jill Jones are a sort of trilogy I think
