Thanks. I didn't notice that at all even though I've listened to the Noon Rendezvous rehearsal countless times.

airth, not to criticse, but maybe you have missed Blast From The Past 2.0?

a few times when you describe a big difference with an old version (e.g. Toy Box) there is an (almost) equally great sounding version on Blast 2.0

Thanks for letting me know. I must have missed it along the way. I'll go and hunt down a copy to see if there's anything else I need to update.

Anyone wanna do one of those Keep/Dump verdicts like @smokeverbs did for BFTP 2.0?

Soft & Wet #1 – Sounds tinny – especially when the vocal kicks in. Unpleasent to listen to, definitely worse than previously heard.

Soft & Wet #2 – A definite improvement. 1st time in stereo? Keeper.

Miss you - Louder & Clearer than my copy, but the noise reduction is too much – and this is a fanedit.

Rough – This one's new to me. Some tape hiss, but I'd rather that than NR. Cool song, was this intended for The Hookers?

Feel U Up – This one's already been discussed. If it's not an authentic mix, I still like it.

Broken – Same source as previously heard. Some NR, but sounds very similar to my copy. A toss-up.

Strange Way – I hear no difference compared to my copy. Flip a coin.

Do Yourself A Favor – Slower than my copy, less noise reduction than my copy, much better transients. A bit fuzzy, but a Keeper! This has always been a favorite of mine, and this is much more pleasant to listen to than the last copy I had. Slightly longer fadeout. A keeper.

Turn It Up – Some NR, but it's not bad. This song has always sounded weird, I think all copies come from the same tape? We've come a long way from the A Better Place To Die version. The Highs aren't as harsh as my last copy. A Keeper.

Moonbeam Levels. Have to wonder why this was included. It sounds different from the previous version, but I can't tell if it's NR or a different source tape. I'll stick with what we had before, the best previously leaked version or the Prince4Ever copy, which are the same.

Jungle Love – Sourced from a facebook post, this isn't going to sound great no matter what. A neat little thing to have though, and sounds good enough.

Wet Dream Cousin – Sounds loads better than my old copy, and seems to run at a more natural speed. Slightly more complete too.

Wonderful Ass #1 – This isn't the one from Purple Rain Deluxe, just so there's no confusion. This lacks the Wendy & Lisa overdubs, and is clearer, sounds like a lower generation copy of what I had previously. A Keeper, although the one from PR Deluxe is definitive.

Velvet Kitty Cat – a bit louder than what we've hear previously. Just a tweek, I'm sure, but it sounds good, better than on PR Deluxe! A Keeper.

My Love Belongs To U – A bit less distorted than last April's leak. Sounded ok before, sounds better here. I would cut the high end a bit though, personally.

Sex Shooter – This one's never sounded great, although it's my favorite version of this song. I first encountered this one on Fuzztone Reality (on blue vinyl), where it sounded like trash. It's gotten better over the years in small increments – but it sounds pretty good here, probably as good as it's going to get outside of an official release – HOWEVER, IT'S MISSING OVER TWO MINUTES AT THE END. THAT'S A DEAL BREAKER.

Wednesday – I didn't check out Jill's soundcloud postings, so I can't compare them to this. This sounds ok, considering it's more than likely from Jill's private cassette.

The Glamorous Life – Sounds better than my copy, not bad at all here. Still has the 2nd verse patch like the previous leak. Is this a tag, or simply to cover up a chewed up section of the tape? Anyway a keeper.

She's Always In My Hair – Slight alternate/early mix of this one, sound quality is fine. This is barely different from the 12” version. A keeper for completists.

Ice Cream Castles Instrumental – A straight instrumental mix of this one, intended for the flipside of a 12'' single? Some might find this one boring, but I dig it. Sound quality is fine. Cool guitar licks throughout. A keeper.

Paisley Park – We've heard this instrumental in last April's leak. Sounds similar here.

When Doves Cry Rehearsal – Sound quality is ok, from a 1984 birthday rehearsal? Edit at 3:57? Nothing I'd return to often.

Next Time Wipe The Lipstick Off Your Collar Alternate Mix. I think this is better without the drums – but if I'd heard this version Before hearing the album cut, I might say the opposite. A neat artifact regardless.

The Dance Electric – Alternate mix, fades out 5 mins early. Not sure if I like the way the drums are mixed on this one. Still better than the version on PR Deluxe.

The Screams Of Passion – Worse sound quality than the previous leak. Cool track though, wanted this one ever since ?uestlove played it.

Around The World In A Day #2 – I honestly can't decide if this better than my copy. It's better in some ways, but worse in others.

Jill's Our Destiny - The sound quality is ok, but jesus christ this is a horrible vocal.

Roadhouse Garden – The Segue between this and Jill's Destiny sounds SO much more natural than on PR Deluxe. I like this song so much. It's ok that it's included here due to the segue.

Mutiny – Well this is a nice surprise. The best sounding copy of Mutiny yet. It's not perfect, but it's Nice and smokes any copy I've heard before. Can we have the rest of this session in nice quality like this please oh please? Yep, a keeper.

Dear Michaelangelo – Sounds worse than last week's leak. This IS a cool track though, thank you leakers.

Toy Box Instrumental – Sounds very similar to my last copy.

Come Elektra Tuesday – Some NR applied vs. the previous leak – it's not intrusive though. This is a cool, funky song. A Keeper, but flip a coin.

Others Here With Us #2 – This one badly needs a remix from the master tape. I get that this track is supposed to sound “wrong” and dissonant, but the orchestra is fighting for space with the rest of the track, and it doesn't work. Would we all love this one as much as we do if we'd heard this version first? A Keeper for history's sake, but not essential.

Living Doll – I really don't care for Jill Jones. That said, this is alright. Sound quality is fine. Includes pretty cool coda starting @ 1:58.

Empty Room – I love this song. And this is the best take, I don't care what anyone says. Sound Quality is as good as it's ever been, but to my recollection it's always sounded good. I could talk about this song all day though, it's one of my all time favorites period. A Keeper, but there was nothing wrong with the previous copies.

I can't do all of these Jill Jones tracks, I'm sorry.

Eternity – Sounds similar to previous leak. Good song though, good vocal. A Keeper.

Power Fantastic – Oh My. This intro sounds GREAT, finally. I've never liked tacking it onto the main track, as the sound was always so bad, but here – it's wonderful, sounds like it should always have. And I'm going to make a bold statement that I'd like to hear everyone's reply to: the main track sounds better here than it does on “The Hits/B-Sides”. You tell me. A Keeper.

Crystal Ball #1 – Is this the first time we've had a complete copy of this version? That's cool. It really only amounts to 90 seconds of the lone kick drum, but there you go. Sound quality is very good here. I've always liked the echo on his vocal in this version. Hearing details I never noticed before. A Keeper.

Hey Hannigan #2 – Wendy & Lisa overdubs? This is the definitive version, in my book. Sound quality is excellent, although it fades earlier than previous leak. A Keeper.

Witness 4 The Prosecution #1 – It sounds as good as my last copy. Same source, I'd bet. I still prefer the Wendy & Lisa & Eric version though.

Movie Star #1 – Pointless inclusion. Sounds fine, other than the NR at the end.

A Place In Heaven #2 – Sounds fine. A personal favorite.

Girl O' My Dreams – More Talking before the beginning – That was cool! Sound quality is fine. Oh wait, different vocals in the middle?? OK, I wasn't expecting that – figured this would be the same old track, just with a more complete intro. This is a new mix, which of course segues into...

Can't Stop This Feeling I Got – This is also a different mix, has some different/more overdubs here and there, and is the best this '86 take has ever sounded.

We Can Funk – Wooo! While the '83 version is a Gem, this remains my favorite take. It sounds wonderful here, similar to the “vocals up” version, but with a more balanced mix. This entire suite of Girl/Can't Stop/Funk has honestly never sounded better. Credit where it's due, this is one of the best things in this set, in my opinion – but I've always been a big fan of this '86 suite. THIS AND THE PREVIOUS TWO TRACKS ARE FUCKING KEEPERS.

Data Bank – This sounds like the previously available copies. It's a treat, but nothing new. I actually prefer the slower, “vocals up” take personally, but this version is fine.

Love And Sex (Sheila E) – Never heard this one before. I like it right away. I was underwhelmed by Sheila's 3rd album, but this would have made a fine addition. Sound isn't perfect, but it's acceptable for a boot. The material transcends the sound quality. This shares the name with the '84 track, but otherwise is totally different. Make no mistake, it's a Keeper.

Yah, U Know. – Yah, U Know.

Large Room, No Light. – A Classic, anywhere, anytime-- but it's far from perfect here. Oh well. Arguably better than previous year's copies. A Keeper, I guess.

Baby Go-Go – Doesn't sound any different than my copy.

Eggplant – This song is fun, that's all. Great Jamming 2nd half. I'm not sure if it sounds any different from last year's leak, but these BFTP volumes tend to be collect all of the leaks since the last volume, so it makes sense that it's here.

Big Tall Wall – Well THIS one's come a long way, hasn't it? Remember when it was COVERED in tape hiss? Remember when, years later a supertweaked, clearer copy appeared and we were like “oh, so that's what this song sounds like”? This appears to be a completely different source, has the complete intro, and has details I haven't heard before. Complete ending too. A Keeper.

The Ball – probably directly from the japanese boot, and consequently, the sound is as good as it gets. Fades out when it's going to segue into Joy In Repetition. A keeper, I guess, unless you have the japanese discs, which you should.

Make Your Mama Happy – This is different from the Crystal Ball '98 version. Fades out way early. Sound is good.

Crucial – already been discussed. This is a fine mix, fine sound, but it fades out quite early and thus is disappointing overall.

Coco Boys – New to me. This, is a very cool track right here. Very Very '86. Great narrative, you can definitely see how it was intended to be part of a play or a movie. The Detroit Crawl AND the kangaroo, yall. A Keeper, A Keeper. Wow.

Emotional Pump – Sounds tweaked from the previous leak. Thanks leakers for this one, I like it a lot. Wouldn't have worked with Joni though, she was right. Would have been interesting though....

Telepathy – Sounds fine.

Wally #2 – Sounds similar to the leak. I like this one, and it's as close to this mythical song we're ever going to get, so dig it. A Keeper, if you didn't grab it last week.

101 – Sounds identical, to my ears, to the leak.

U Got The Look (alternate) – This doesn't sound wonderful, last week, or now, but it's cool to have. Different extended portion at the end, the “Prince told me to grab a banjo that was in the corner of the studio” story that Sheena's told before. A Keeper, but I hope we get a better copy someday.

La La La, He He Hee (Alternate) – The more I listen to this version, the more I like. It gets to the bone of the song, and still jams and grooves. A Keeper, if you didn't grab it already.

Overall, this is a mixed bag, with some new definitive tracks, and well worth tracking down. I slag Eye Records a lot, but plenty of this is worth hearing, even if you've already got the leaks from last week. I'm not paying $400 for the set though.

Haven't listened to vol 5 yet, will write about it later. to Be continued, let's keep talking.

Edit: Volume 5, this is the now the definitive "Positivity". I was expecting the same old bad copy. I was wrong. Wow!

Lots of good stuff on this one! Grail trax The Screams of Passion and Big Tall Wall are superb, and many other trax in better quality than previously available. La La La He He Hee is just bad-ass! My fav b-side, and now to have this early/alternate version in such fantastic quality. Two thumbs and two big toes up!

How is The Screams Of Passion worse than the previous leak when it sounds fuller and the hiss is gone?

WE CAN FUNK is the same on the Box O Chocolates boot, the Box O Chocolates is even better quality. Also I have a longer version of Sex Shooter Vanity 6 which is better quality then the Blast From The Past boot.

To my ears the best "We Can Funk" 1986 version is still that available on the Thunderball "H20" release.

It is like an official release (only a minor dropout at some point). Really.

And I find somewhat incredible that many later releases didn't use the H20 version but others less good sounding (including BOC).

Is that the version where his vocal is really loud?

Here right now I don't have the CD to check it, but as far as I remember P vocal were mixed right with all instruments.

What I remember well is that it was the first time I can detect so well the echoes and reverbs on the vocals (more or less same effects as on "We Can Fuck").

Probably someone who have the H20 CDS in his collection can confirm.

So going by Princevault this must be the "summer 1986" version of Girl O My Dreams -> Can't Stop This Feeling I Got-> We Can Funk and Data Bank which are different to what we had previously, which must have been the "June 17/18" versions. Not hearing anything different on Data Bank beyond the Eye filters?

Awesome to have both versions anyway, those 4 tracks have always been a favourite session of mine biggrin

A favorite session indeed. I don't hear anything new in Data Bank here either. This copy of the Girl O/Can't Stop/WCF suite is now my preferred version though, no contest.

Keep your headphones on.

After listening to BOX O CHOCOLATES today, it's deff one of the best quality sounding boots out of them all... Even Wonderful Ass sounds best on the BOX O CHOCOLATES boot I have vs the PR DELUXE...

MOVIE STAR

A PLACE IN HEAVEN

GIRL O MY DREAMS

DATA BANK

WONDERFUL ASS

all sound better on the BOX O CHOCOLATES then BLAST FROM THE PAST.

I'm listening to everything right now and I'm on cloud nine... cloud9 First song I went to is my favorite Wonderful A$$ and I absolutely love this version as well as the Deluxe one. I love the fact that it's not the same. Almost like a new Wonderful A$$. It doesn't get any better than this! nutty nutty flower flower flower

The best part is the first comment from 10 months ago: "double thumbs down....booo! this is not prince nor prince related". They seem genuinely unhappy, like they'd been tricked. Very strange. Although I never knew that Hey Hannigan was considered for Newpower Soul, as the description says. Doesn't sound like the right period to me. biggrin

I always thought it was a "Diamonds and Pearls" era outtake for some reason.
