As we think of those affected by Hurricane Harvey, we remember Prince's single S.S.T.

Prince released the single S.S.T to raise funds for Hurricane Katrina relief. 365 Prince Songs In A Year feature's the song. http://diffuser.fm/prince...e-katrina/

S.S.T. was first available as a download on the NPG Music Club within 24 hours of its recording in response to Hurricane Katrina's destruction of New Orleans, LA, USA. Two days later, the song was offered as a download bundle with Brand New Orleans and Mavis Staples' You Will Be Moved. Eight weeks later, a CD single of S.S.T. was released.
Initial tracking took place on 2 September 2005 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, as Prince watched footage of Hurricane Katrina's effects on the city of New Orleans while listening to Sade's The Sweetest Taboo (from the 1985 album Promise, also released as a single), which became the acronym used for the song's title ("Sade's Sweetest Taboo").
"S.S.T." is also an acronym for "sea surface temperature", which can be used in forecasting hurricanes. Brand New Orleans, which is based around the final instrumental section of S.S.T., was recorded at the same session.

I have always loved "S.S.T.," and I have friends and family in Houston. They are doing well, but things are critical so many in Houston.

S.S.T. was a heartwarming gesture of generosity, although the song sounded like a total throwaway.

Beautiful song I still regularly play.

[Verse 1]
Who will be a guest in your tent?
Certainly not the ones who don't wanna repent
And keep giving guns to the poorest of our nation's sons

Who is gonna call you by name?
With no confusion, trinity or preacher's vain?
Who says that everytime
And opens up the eyes of the blind

Who will be the one in his bed?
Certainly not the ones who put thorns on his head
And wish him dead while they took his daily bread

[Chorus]
Which one is of value to you?
The one depleting the oil supply
Or the One that renews it
And keeps the peace
Like the groove in Sade's "Sweetest Taboo"

[Hook]
Give it to me, give it to me, the sweetest
(the sweetest)
Give it to me, give it to me
Give it to me, give it to me, the sweetest

[Verse 2]
Who will be a guest in your tent?
Are you gonna be happy with how your life has been spent?
Did you have open arms for each and everybody you met?

Or did you let them die in the rain?
Endless war, poverty or hurricane
Then it's time for another groove
Like Sade's "Sweetest Taboo"

[Hook][x2]
Give it to me, give it to me, the sweetest
Give it to me, give it to me
Give it to me, give it to me, the sweetest

Smart, cool song with introspective lyrics. It is also interesting and so Princely double meaning that SST is also the acronym for Sea Surface Temperature, an important factor in hurricane dynamics.

Adorecream

I actually bought the CD single when it came out and agree, it is a great song, has a real 3121 type feel and it wa sprobably the first Prince thing I bought after my long haitus.

.

I went off Prince in early 1998 and only got back into him in 2004/05 with the songs Musicology and Cinnamon Girl, which is funny, because I don't like them now. SST was something different.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I sadly didn't even know about this song until recently. neutral

I really like it, and I'm always proud of his philanthropy.
