I like it. It made my tits milk, even though I’m a dude. I’m not doubting it is his most personal song. But, it just doesn’t sound like that. I love U But I Don’t Trust U Anymore from Rave has a far more confessional feel. Wally is great because it has that Sign Of the Times era feel to me. Gotta go. I need to pat my tits with Kleenex. I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore always felt more like a pose to me. Not bad, it just didn't ever really strike me.

lawd, now do you insert images in iOS?

Duh, I get that but in 1991 he was coming from Graffiti Bridge going into Diamonds and Pearls and to me, musically speaking, it just doesn't seem to fit. It sounds more to me like what he was doing in 1986 going into 1987. shrug

Fair enough, but, it's not from 86/87, whether it sounds like it or not.

As for her comparison to the original, she says it has similar lyrics but different instruments and a different tone.

Astonishing

Worth the wait. An amazing song, that for me is a classic. Worth waiting for. It certainly has that emotional resonance.

Thank you, Prince, and of course the uploaders. biggrin

The song's a classic. Regardless of what we were expecting, or what it's supposed to represent, it's completely fantastic. I keep reading peoplel saying they're underwhelmed, but if it had been on any album (and I can't think which it might have fitted, Sign 'o' the Times maybe? Parade?) it would be a stand out tune. It's brilliant.

Not disappointed. Great song. This is Adonis&Bathsheba and Crucial territory, which I personally love.

Whether or not it has the emotional impact of the version Susan Rodgers speaks of, this is still an incredible song. For me, it lives up to the hype.

As I said in the other thread - before it got deleted? - this song succeeds in being totally bombastic and personal at the same time. The story-telling is original and heartfelt. The 'Oh my la-di-da' hits a nerve. Prince's singing is full of emotion. The music is pure passion.

Some of the outtakes have been a bit of a dissappointment recently. Many of them have been nice, but far from essential. From the sample, I'd expected this to be the same, but in fact it surpasses my expectations of what the rerecorded 'inferior' Wally would be. It's songs like this that remind me why I'm a Prince fan.

Susan Rogers said that regardless of what the date on the file says, it was recorded after '87 for sure. She thinks it's from 1991, but could not say for certain. She is certain it's NOT 1986 and it's after she left in 1987.

The song is definitely not complete. It starts abruptly as if we are missing the beginning of the song.

Wally has the actual cassette Prince gave to him back in 1987. It has this version on it. He played it for me about 10 years ago when I interviewed him. He told me the story behind it and I held the cassette in my hands. This version os definitely not from 1991. It's the re-record from 86/87. Wally can confirm this.

I like it but think it would probably be a bit better without the horns. . I imagine the original was quite moving but the slightly tongue in cheek attitude of this version doesnt drown out the underlining sadness and I do think its a geniunely great melody with some honest lyrics.

It's clearly closer to 'Adore' than 'Insatiable'. I don't believe for a second that a tune with Leeds and Bliss and those horns on it is from the 1990s.

Lives up to the hype I'd say. Can't imagine what the allegedly superior deleted version sounded like when this one sounds so great.

Yes, this version still retains some of the sadness, honesty and sly self-ridicule that Susan spoke of (the tiger impression preceding “I’m on the prowl tonight”). Musically, it’s as though the structure is constantly of the verge of collapse, only to be rescued by those sweeping, emotional musical swells. It’s quite remarkable. I imagine that the original lyrics were simply more brutal and unflinching – Prince acknowledging how ridiculous he appeared to himself at that moment.

Superb description.

Love this track, it's really growing on me.

Some very interesting leaks going on right now...

I have to be honest..... in my opinion this is one of the times in which the myth surpasses the real thing.

If released back in the time in SOTT, I think "Wally" would be regarded now as one of the lesser songs of the album.

Nice little song, but not a lost masterpiece and surely nothing deserving the fuss of all these years.
We have many many better P songs, obviously official released tracks but also unreleased outtakes.

Just my opinion.
