So I've had time to give it a few more listens and tried imagining it without the horns and can totally see how the horns changed the "feel" of the song.

Especially when he goes into the

"Oh-my-la-dee-dah

It's too late for sympathy

Whatever will be, will be

I'm going to a party

And if I don't find somebody

Somebody will find me

Huh, what am I going to do

She was the only one in the whole world that

I could talk to..."

part. I think if I heard that without the horns I'd be a big ol' mess of tears. nod

She said that regardless of what the date on the file says, it was recorded after '87 for sure. She thinks it's from 1991, but could not say for certain. She is certain it's NOT 1986 and it's after she left in 1987.

IDK but it really sounds like his transition from Parade into SOTT to me. shrug

It was alright. If it was just "Track 5" on "The Work Vol. 2" or whatever, it probably wouldn't have been hyped as such the behemoth, "holy grail" type track it supposedly was. With that said, i'm glad to finally get the chance to experience it, even though it's not the obliterated original.

Duh, I get that but in 1991 he was coming from Graffiti Bridge going into Diamonds and Pearls and to me, musically speaking, it just doesn't seem to fit. It sounds more to me like what he was doing in 1986 going into 1987. shrug

Fair enough, but, it's not from 86/87, whether it sounds like it or not.

As for her comparison to the original, she says it has similar lyrics but different instruments and a different tone.

Earlier tonight she did a Q&A at the 3rd Annual Paisley Midwest Party put on by The Paisley 5 & Dime in Winchester, KY. The Q&A lasted nearly 3 hours then she continued to talk to people one on one as she signed autographs and took pictures with people. She was great, super nice.. just fantastic.

It's quite charming and I really like it but was never going to live up to the hype. Remember Susan was there when Prince was emotional and within that context it was probably quite a major experience for her.

Think of the Black Album which we already knew and the change in the perception of it after 1994. Same with Moonbeam Levels.

When I saw it listed on the new bootleg tracklist, my heart skipped a beat. When I saw a download link for it this morning, my heart nearly gave out. I still can't quite believe it actually exists.

I knew I would feel some sense of disappointment as I pressed play. It's really impossible for any song to live up to the mythic status given to Wally on first listen. I felt kind of strange to sit there after playing it through, trying to make sense of what I'd heard. All I can say at the moment is that it seems to be grower. Things that I thought sounded ridiculous at first, have taken on more resonance after several listens. Only time will tell where it will place in the Prince canon.

I'm grateful to have heard it. Thank you to whomever decided now was the time to finally leak it.

When could this have been recorded then?
It has Eric and Matt on it. How do the drums sound, often a big giveaway.
Maybe prince did make a cassette before wiping it when Susan was in the toilet or something

Tony M bringing somthin chill like the Willing n Able rap would have been the cherry on top, but as it stands Wally is the Prince that lives up to the superlatives. Only he could have done this and there will never be another. Fuck Lionel Richie and his rubber face.

pout It's such a shame we'll never get to hear 'Wally (Sunglasses and a Mankini Rap Version)'. Prince brought Susan back to spend two hours annihilating that one with a sledgehammer.

People seem to be forgetting the orignal was deleted by Prince himself, that was the whole legend as recounted by Susan Rogers! This version is the one that was re-recorded soon after as mentioned on Princevault (I don't believe this is from 91, it has all the hallmarks of the 86 era (the horns especially), although thats not to say that he may not have done another version in 91).

So as this is a rerecord after the event it's understandable that it could be lacking some of the original emotion as by then he had probably removed more of the personal stuff and added loads of overdubs. That said, the first 30 seconds for me is the most touching part - the haunting way he sings.

I'm not convinced by 1991, either. Possibly '88, around the time of LoveSexy, but I doesn't sound at all like what he was doing later. And he hasn't generally been a guy to say, "Hey, put these drum machines away, and let's recreate my aesthetic from 5 years ago." Maybe he tinkered with it 1991 or something.

Secretly, I'm holding out a hope that there's a piece of the Wally story Susan's been missing out. "Ok, ok, Prince: I'll scrub the tape.... Hey - woah! - I just got a telegram to say James Brown's in the lobby and he wants to meet you. He says go now and he'll come in about four-and-a-half minutes...."
