Thanx for the responses, everybody. The bootleg I was talking about is a 3 CD set called H2O. It came out in 1999. It also features a version of the song by George Clinton and the hallway version of Computer Blue. The rest of it is mostly from the 90s. [Edited 7/1/17 8:10am]

No contest between then, the PRD version outshines them all by a mile. This is how Prince wrote, how he wanted it to sound, how he wanted it to feel. It is very personal and direct, there is no doubt in ones mind what he is trying to get at here.

I like all the incarnations. 83 is the best to me. His background ah-ah's after the "see this gold chain around my waste" part are so insane! 86 is a little too slow for my liking. 90 sounds a little too clean but is still great.
I agree with all of this. The '86 version, while a great showcase of his then band's superior musicianship, misses the filthy discotheque grind of the '83 version. I can only imagine the things this track would have inspired with steady rotation in places like Studio 54.

By now I have also heard the 1986 version (thank you!) and it turns out I knew it already. The 1986 version is cool too, sure, but I still prefer the 1983 version which is unsurpassed for me.
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time... |

This new version is likely my favorite, followed by the 1990 version. The segment that starts with "you can blow the candle out" is one of my favorite Prince moments.
The 1986 version is nice too, but I definitely prefer the others. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you! |

that line is interesting.
In 1983/84 did we see Prince wearing any gold chains around his waste?
The first I remember was the Parade era

He did have it during the Purple Rain tour. During the Beautiful Ones, he unbuttoned his pants and ripped the chain off and threw it into the audience. TRUE BLUE |

I like the GB version. Much fuller, can hear the thump of the drums and I like the "George Clinton" additions. |

It's during the part when he walks away from the piano and is on the right speaker. He does a little striptease. TRUE BLUE |

I will admit that I am absolutely terrible with lyrics (it would be quicker for me to make a list of lyrics that I actually got right than list my "misheard" lyrics)...but isn't this one "see this gold chain around my waist--I WANT TO GIVE IT TO YOOOOU"(?) "3123...that's next door to where the party be..." |

I see where you're coming from ...but I hear "what are you gonna do...?" in the lyrics and it kinda reminds me of that part from Do Me Baby where he says "What R U gonna do? You just gonna sit there and watch...?" |
