People like Eye Records are several steps removed from that, so they don't care. It's not affecting their personal relationships or friendships. And let me be clear, if you've ever had a mail out from a company like Eye, you know they are selling thousands of copies at $50+ a pop. Do the math.

True.

But let me say that I have to give thanks to Eye Records simply because I finally listened (and can listen when I want) to the complete Flesh Sessions.

If it was for the "elected inner circle" we never had access to something so beautiful.

Yes, but they got this from someone. If that someone had put the songs up online, you could thank that person and not thank a 'company' profiting.

.

That's the point. Support people sharing bootlegs, don't support people proffiting from bootlegs when there's no need other than greed.

Do fans of any other artist operate the way fans of Prince's do with regard to boots / unreleased music?

Thankfully, I don't know much about 'rare' stuff out there. I'd settle for better/best quality versions of already circulating stuff like ATWIAD (bass), Take Me With U extended, Euphoria Highway, etc...

.

Elite collectors often hoard those pristine recordings, while selling tagged and diluted material to labels.

.

Depends on the artist. Some years ago a bunch of NIN fans collected an amount of money and paid that to a musician who'd said in interviews that he'd worked on unreleased remixes for a NIN track back in the early 1990s and that he still had it on DAT. The money convinced him to liberate said tracks. The result: http://www.nin.wiki/Recoiled (check the "Uncoiled" section at the bottom).

.

But Reznor has always been cool about boots etc. and has even provided sources (e.g. GBs of raw footage from three concerts). They've even had press releases that linked to fan captures of gigs etc.

How are they doing anyone a favour if we aren't ever going to hear them? Even if it I did classify it as a favour, it's nowhere near a huge one. I'm not jealous, it's good for those guys, I just don't see how the community at large is helped by this information.

There's definitely people who would rather that we share info, than not. Folks like BorisFishpaw, T, BigChick, Neversin, Revolution81, Mindbells9 and others have shared tons and tons of info about uncirculating stuff over the years.

I get not everyone feels that way, and it's different without Prince here. "Wally" has such hype around it thanks to the backstory of it, that it's a bit different, I guess. But there are still people that want to learn.

One of the main problems is misinformation. It's laughable how much misinformation there is.

If you search through the org archives for information about that song, it's absolutely ridiculous, and you can see how chronologically, speculation gets repeated and taken as truth. Some people even stated that they thought the song was probably a myth, or it became a different song that we probably already knew. And loads of other nonsense.

Even when the clip leaked, people started just plain making stuff up. More than one person said "oh, it's just the same song as Billy's Sunglasses" - no it's not. It has nothing in common with that except for the the reference to sunglasses. Musically the two songs have ZERO in common. Neither lyrically, other than that line.

I hate misinformation, and I will correct it when I see it.

By the way, if the Estate start fucking with people, you WILL see shit leak. See the recent Jill Jones leaks.

Tupac was as prolific as Prince in terms of the amount of material he would record. Lots of people were sitting on material because they were at odds with the Estate after he passed. Musicians and producers sold songs and footage to fans, actually. Some of them deliberately didn't hand stuff over because they didn't want to see it get remixed and turned to shit. Some songs built up huge legendary status just like "Wally" - there's a track Tupac wrote for the entry of the Mike Tyson match that he attended just before his murder, called "Road To Glory" that for years only existed as a shitty PA recording from the fight. Eventually, it leaked. That track, for Tupac fans, was probably the "Wally" equivalent in terms of status. Same situation applied back then, possibly even worse because you used to see Tupac bootleg CDs at every market and mom and pop store in major cities and sharing music online wasn't as common back them (I'm talking the years immediately after his death, so the late 90s and early 00s). There's about a million different layers of politics to it and getting mad about it doesn't solve anything. There's plenty of stuff other traders have that I haven't heard. And vice versa. That's just how it goes.

If folks want to harass someone about boots, go and harass Questlove. He played like 10 unreleased songs at the fucking First Avenue club night lol

Just talkin' for me, but it is simple.....

I love P for the delight his music give to my ears and heart.

Is it really "Knowledge" that essential, when ears and heart can't be delighted?!?!!?

I knew titles and descriptions of the Flesh tracks since mid 90s but I finally can "feel" them just two months ago.

That was important. That was feeling P again.

Just my opinion.

I understand that it sucks when you share for love and someone else turns that into a profit. But this is inevitable as long as some people are willing to spend money on a pressed disc of bootleg material that they could get digital copies of for free.

What I don't understand is why those that have the material don't just release intentionally inferior material, let the bootleggers print it up, then release the pristine copies for free right as the pressed discs are being released. Do this a few times and the labels will get a reputation for selling copies that are inferior to the free copies and even fewer people would be willing to buy their product.

Just an idea.

Or another idea--just send everything to me. Then I'll decide what to do. lol

I now offer whatever I have to those that are serious fans. I feel my job is to share this amazing gift especially now that he is gone. I ask that the bootleggers do it b/c they would have the means and motivation to do so. Quite frankly its not that simple! You want the music then shut down lables like Eye records & Sabotoge! The reason collectors dont put there stuff out is there sick of lables running with it and selling it! When they didnt obtain it on there own in the first place!

I'm sorry, I don't buy this...I've been involved in other trading circles, mostly those without bootleg collections/companies. Most of these people still hoard the tracks, they don't share freely, only trade, even if they could leak them without fear of repercussion. Plus, in this day and age where song leaks can easily be shared in public places (hell, even the Eye/Sabotage bootlegs can be somewhat easily found with a simple Google search), it's not that difficult to post something somewhere and say, "hey, download this here! Don't encourage the bootleggers!"

[Edited 6/26/17 16:23pm]

After reading the whole thread, this is still the most salient point. Leaks can be shared anonymously.

.

I reasonably ask elite traders to liberate their treasures, anonymously, for the simple reason of sharing Prince's unique talent with all the rest of us - his fans.

.

Elite traders have the opportunity now, with the state of the estate, to play a unique role in deepening the legacy of Prince. Music is life - elite traders have an opportunity to enhance the lives of fellow fans immeasurably.

.

Eternal thanks to all the people who have leaked the things we common collectors have access to. You are the actual life blood of Prince's serious fandom, and you have allowed me to see a picture of Prince far, far deeper than his commercial releases portrayed.

.

Elite traders.. won't you help continue this? And take it to a whole other level by sharing at least some of the treasures you have?

I think collectors should share all of the rare shit with everyone and stop keeping it amongst the "elite fans". What makes you guys so special anyway?
