prince knows we have an exc copy of the boot version...so he's furnishing us with an alt version
Can someone help me out? Which boot has the best quality version of "The Dance Electric" with guitar solo? I have many boots but quite frankly haven't looked into it enough to figure out which boot has the highest quality version of Dance Electric with guitar. Thanks!
I haven't heard this yet. But I wonder if they had to use a significantly different version than what was given to Andre Cymone because the master became the property of Columbia Records once Prince gifted the song. Perhaps the estate just couldn't reclaim that version featuring Prince's vocal instead of Andre's (without WB shelling out for a licensing deal from Sony).
That could be why Prince stopped giving essentially completed productions of songs to artists like Patti Labelle after the early 90s. He finally understood what it meant to lose ownership/control of the master recording.

No way...Anytime a song is rercorded it's essentially a new song from a legal standpoint. Hence...1999, you could never record a song exactly the same twice.
I suppose it's a bit annoying because it's built on top of the same backing track. If it was entirely different like the two versions of Possessed it'd be easier to take. Now this is the "official" version and i'm a bit sad because I prefer the other. I'd be happy enough with the full length version with Andre Cymone singing to get a proper release.
I mean, it's still a 10/10 track either way but, yeah, i miss the guitars and backing vocals.

Wasn't the release on AC only an instrumental? (that's what I have) A very good sounding version with AC on vocals was on BFTP1.
Yup it was just an instrumental. It had the guitars and backing vocals so it was one iteration later than this one but didn't have Andre's lead vocals yet. Dr Funkenberry (I think) had a rip up from an acetate of the full version at that time as well but it had a few errors in it for whatever reason.
why did they cut away that excellent guitar-sound..??????
They didn't cut it away. This is an early version of the song.
ah...that makes sense. But like Dance said, that sux. But I get that the general idea is the time frame of the songs created during that PR era is whats being presented.
Maybe, unlikely but maybe, they chose this version because the guitar and vocal overdubs that were added when he gave the song to Andre were post-Purple Rain sessions?
Or they just don't have any later version with Prince singing it in their vault? Based on the A.C. re-release no one has a copy of the full version with vocals, it was stated at the time that the instrumental version was the only one they had.
Obviously we have the bootleg but the quality ain't perfect and maybe no one outside the Prince Vault stuck-in-legal-limbo gatekeepers have a higher generation copy of it .

This song was recorded after Purple Rain came out. And WB wouldn't put that much thought into it regardless.

Yes, that and the vocal version of God, that's kind of where I was putting the mark for end of sessions. In the booklet they say (incorrectly) it was recorded in 1983 so maybe that's what they thought they were releasing? Clutching at straws I admit.
The rest of my post still stands though. I don't think anyone would release this version over the more complete version if they had the option. At least I bloody hope not.
The Dance Electric: nooooo, there is no guitar on the new Expanded version...
the guitar distorted (starting 3: 43) in the 2014 outtake-version: this guitar is MISSING!!!!!
I am hugely disappointed.... this track is essential, so brilliant how could they fuck it up like that...
For Being songs from this period the absence of guitar almost makes no sense. Not just on DE, but all the so called outtakes on this set. There is so much synth compared to the versions we're used to I'd believe these were demos if They weren't so polished.
Worst track on the second disc for me. About 5 minutes too long and I dislike for all the same reasons I dislike Automatic. After about 3.5 minutes we've heard it all. At about 8:30 I think, ah it's gonna fade out now. Nope, 3 more minutes of the same thing over and over again still to come.

thats that razor geetar..yall telling me that its not on the special edition
they trollin
maybe its a way to entice for addition of it on ANOTHER sp ed in the future..eith way, it's b.s. and a bastardization of the song
its like leaving out the solo from Just My Imagination
Perhaps that's Dez on guitar in that cut and they couldn't come to terms w/whomever?
Modernaire is missing from this release.
In some cases, licensing might be more than just P and WB... imagine if one of the band had a say, after adding a key part, but didn't get a deal they like?

There is nothing to suggest that Dez is on the release. Why would Dez be on a 1984 track?
Mondernair is absent because WB had no intention of including tracks involving other artists on the release. Sinple as that.

really..? do you dislike The Dance Electric and Automatic.. OK...
Haven't seen a comment like that coming...
Simply those 2 tracks are essential in Prince musicworld, imho....

That aint no Dez on guitar and its already been explained why its this version sans geetar on the set. And why would Modenaire be on it when other songs from the other artists aren't part of the set? Don't answer, it's rhetorical.

Wha? Its not like Automatic just drones on for the whole song. There are lyrics, spoken word sectons, key changes, synth stabs and guitar battles all up in it. Ive never heard someone say they dislike Automatic but everyone has their differences too.
I agree with those that feel that the guitar heavy version is better, but to be fair to WB, they can't win. Fans complain when they fail to reference official releases against circulating leaks, and then bemoan the fact that they chose the wrong version.

yeah but if they'd released the guitar heavy version no one would have complained and they'd have won on this track.

and we wouldn't have known of this pre version sans geetar so we wouldn't have complained
