His first hit in the Netherlands was Controversy (28) after that 1999 (14), so he wasn't very famous at that time.

Isn't it strange that, up to now, the Billboard is not showing any PR activity?

Billboard, Hits Daily Double, Mediatraffic and the Tuesday midweek of Uk charts are all sleeping, indeed, and should have been updated days ago. Maybe because of the holiday summer ?

Good news:)) Shows there is a market for his music and reissues... Top Ten (or Top 20) worldwide for a 33 year old record is fantastic... Surely they did not do a lot of promotion in the classic sense, but there has been lots of reports in the media and online...so people know about the release... One big single like dance electric or wonderful ass with a video would have been nice!
Someone explain to me why Wonderful Ass was not released as a single and pushed to radio statuons and media outlets. WB has been so uncreative in marketing this release. New Prince music should be treated as vital and it definately would attract a new audience.

Global Charts:
http://www.mediatraffic.de/albums.htm
So the world charts have been updated and what is interesting is Media Traffic is the most accurate number for total all time sales for an album...
World Wide Purple Rain Deluxe debuted at #4 with 94,000 sales. Also the current standing total all time sales for Purple Rain is 21 Million.

With zero promotion, not even in the specialized press, PR manages to make decent numbers. It is in fact even #3 in term of pure sales, without streaming added. . If it had the promotion of SGT PEPPERS, I guess it would have sold at least the 182.000 ex they sold the 1st week one month ago. What a waste. . if it was released when Prince was at his peak in 2004 or 2009, it would have made 250/300.000 ex the 1st week in the US alone. It outsold Joshua Tree and RadioHead's reedition 1st week, which were much more promoted too. . I only hope the reedition has legs and that it outsold the 675.000 ex sold last year. Before the reedition, PR already sold 55/60 k worldwide, so it is at least at 150 k in 2017.

. Keep dreaming. Prince is not, and likely will never be, the Beatles in terms of across the board, mainstream popularity. That's not a comment on quality of music, just a simple truth. I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

Media Traffic clams PR sold 21 worldwide... Always thought it was more... It's a shame the RIAA didn't recertify PR in the U.S. It surely has surpassed 13 million since the last certification in 1996.

1) It's my opinion that Purple Rain Remaster was intended to be released by Prince. I mean why do it if you don't wont to release it. I also think that Prince's terms where too much for WB. So, when he passed the estate needs new streams of income, they no longer had Prince touring funds to keep things going.
2)Yes, Prince was against streaming, but he could afford to be. The estate could not exsist financially with out streaming. The exposure to Prince music to the public is needed to keep interest in Prince and his music. Where as Prince could just tour and make money without streaming.
3)Nobody should be using Wikipedia as a source for any facts.
4)I enjoy Prince music, but in no way is any new single going to help sell more albums (music changes). Unless they re-release When Doves Cry. That song is radio friendly even in today's pop market. The vault stuff all though good, would not play on top 40.
5) I think that Beastie Boys LTI album roughly sales around 100,000 annually through out the 90's; one would think Purple Rain would follow suit. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Prince was not against streaming he had his music streamed on Tidal. He wanted to be paid an acceptable royalty rate and unlike a lot of artist he had the abliity to pull his stuff off and take it where he could get paid.

it looks like the second week sales PR DELUXE will take a dramatic drop and already out of the TOP 20 indicating less than 15k sales...

That makes sense given that the major fans already had it preordered and there has been so little publicity. Not only is there not WB publicity, but usually there would be people involved in the release (Prince, the person who remastered it, the Revolution, etc.)hitting the talk show circuit and giving interviews to magazines and so forth. This would have help spread the word, but it just isn't happening. The few Prince fans I know outside of the org who have at least a handful of Prince albums didn't even know about the deluxe releases until I told them after the fact. It is not like the average middle aged person scans itunes or amazon music for the latest releases. They need to hear about it on Ellen, in the New York Times (no review that I am aware of), etc.

I'm not saying Prince is more popular than the Beatles overall. By the way, SGT PEPPERS sold 10 millions more than PR worldwide. But SGT PEPPERS 2017 had TV and radio adds all over the world, a huge coverage in the press, a tv special, etc. . If PR deluxe benefited from the same treatment, you can only agree it would have done better than 94k without any promotion at all. That's logical. If you don't create a hype about a release, you can't sell it. That's why some orgers here didn't buy it. It would have helped him to stay longer in the charts too. . Hell, WB didn't even send copies to the press Moreover they released it at the worst period of the year in term of sales. . Personnally I bought it the second week in France !

23 millions including 16 millions in the US. The RIAA can't recertify it, unless WB give them book accounts proving the sales. It should be easy though, because between 1996 and 2017, the SS sales are more than 2.5 millions. . i read that The Revolution were given lately a 13*P plaque commemorating the PR sales in the US. What a joke, knowing that the sales are about 3 millions higher.

Purple Rain (the movie and the album) was such a major career milestone for Prince,it's surprising that Warners aren't doing more to publicize, promote and celebrate it! There should be some kinda TV special devoted to it.....or how about some new videos for a few of the previously unreleased tracks? Or maybe some special screenings of the movie in select theatres/cities? There is so much more that they could be doing!!! I'm shocked and disappointed at how Warners are basically ignoring this project, smh.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
That's obvious. A little tv add campaign began in France in a the less viewed network. Better than nothing, I hope this will start all around the world.

Seriously, they could have hyped up one of the previously unreleased tracks as a single and video--obviously "We Can Fuck" wouldn't get anywhere in the U.S. (such language!), but an edited "Dance Electric" could get some attention (yes, Andre's version was a top 10 R&B hit over 30 years ago, but it missed the pop top 40 and the wider public doesn't know it), and "Wonderful Ass" wouldn't be out of the question. I'm not saying they'd set the world on fire, but they could get some press and maybe some radio/TV play.
There's a lot they could do for this release and so little they've done. But at least we finally have it.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Exactly. There are so many things that they (Warners) could have done to hype up this project! Purple Rain deserves to be celebrated....in a big way! I like your idea of a Record Store Day release of the full-length "Computer Blue".What a missed opportunity. What is wrong with Warners?!

Almost 100k? I'm impressed. Anyone coming for the sales has no clue about the industry climate right now. Big popstars are pulling those numbers with new releases. This is very good.

If Prince was still alive - he would add copy of the album to the every ticket - and boost the sale enormously
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
And cause he did that in 2004, Billboard changed the rules admitting that in the future to count as a sale...

Just like This Could Be us or X's and Q's recently, Electric Intercourse could have been played heavily on Urban AC radios. With a music video to help it, at least on Youtube, it would have helped, for sure.

The record divsion was sold to a private equity group who I feel has no idea about the music industry. I believe Prince only went back to them to get the master tapes back and perhaps they had a good proposal on the table but they are really hurting money wise and obvisouly have no real budget for marketing and promotion.
They are lucky Prince had such a hard core fan base and that they had some material in there vault. I knew the project would do well and I hope the success will motivate the estate to continue to work with WB to put out music even if it is from the WB vault and not the best sound quality. At this time this is going to be the best means to bring in revenue.
I do not care what any of you say in the end Prince did the right thing going back to WB if not we would have no unrealeashed material to listen to. He did good.
