The only Princes album that sold more outside the US are Diamonds and Pearls and Lovesexy. SOTT, Batman and Parade sold about the same amount in the US and outside.

.

There is not even a possible comparison with singles sales, that were always way higher in the US than outside for Prince.

.

You're right, he is a good seller in Netherlands. Too bad it's a small market.

.

His death was highly covered for days in the french medias, I can at least tell you that. Much more than George Michael. But TVBO sold only 30.000 ex and Purple Rain 20.000 last year. Very poor results.

The re-released version of OK Computer selling so much more than Purple Rain in the UK wasn't surprising, but I was kind of hoping PR would have outsold it.

It would have, if WB didn't decide to no spend one penny in the promotion of PR.

1st official numbers and sales :

Uk midweek charts :

Albums

1 Radiohead - OK Computer ^ 17,495
2 Imagine Dragons - Evolve * 13,030
3 Ed Sheeran - ÷ (Divide) 10,086
4 Royal Blood - How Did We Get So Dark? 8,835
5 Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain ^ 8,320

.

Interesting to see that the #1 is a re-release, that sold 2 times more than Purple Rain.

.

By the end of the week, it is likely PR will be out of the top 5, if not top 10 (1st day sales are higher).

The albums at the top of the chart are no surprise at all.

Album charts the week after Glastonbury are always topped by the headline acts which this year are Radiohead, Foo Fighters and Ed Sheeran. We had it last year with Lionel Richie soaring to no.1 and the year before with Dolly Parton soaring to no.2.

OK Computer was a huge album in UK, much bigger than Purple Rain, it's reissue is huge news and their Glastonbury set was huge. Well done to them.

Prince seemed to have an open invite to headline but clearly didnt want to.

I havn't seen any OK Computer publicity round London but it dosn't need them and well done them. It's a great album.

The one thing impressive is the Sales Plus Streaming artist is so much lower for Prince yet his phsyical sales eclipse in comparison to the other artists... 2 Chainz SPS is 47k yet only saes is 7-9K.

Bascially 97% of Prince's sales come from physical copies...

That's really a disappointment that the 3 CD version is counted appart the 2 cd version and the original album.

It could have been #4.

.

If there was promotion, people would have listened to it on streaming services and it would have gone higher.

.

I predict 55/60.000 sales woldwide for the first week, below U2's Joshua Tree (not even talking about Sgt Peppers). Shame on WB.

Tuesday update midweek uk album charts : not good

Albums

1 Radiohead - OK Computer (19.5k) ^
2 Ed Sheeran - ÷ (15.7k)
3 Imagine Dragons - Evolve (15.1k) *
4 Royal Blood - How Did We Get So Dark (11.1k)
5 Prince & The Revolution - Purple Rain (8.9k) ^

As you can see, every album has a boost...except purple Rain that sold only 165 copies monday (!!!) eek

.

The second week will be terrible, and I guess this will be the same thing everywhere in the world, even in The Usa.

.

Now, where are the guys that said that WB had a marketing strategy by not promoting at all the new set? I think the preorders were not good at all and that WB dropped out the idea of promoting the set.

.

What a disappointment, the long awaited first reedition of a Prince album, one of the most acclaimed and sold album worldwide, getting this cheap release that nobody bothers to buy.

Why would anybody think that a three decades old album released with a few widely circulated bootlegs and a concert video that was available on YouTube
Last week ( I got a stunning MP4 version that probably looks better on my 4K tv
Than the DVD ) would sell gangbusters? Many casual fans picked up a copy in the
Days and weeks after his death.

🤷🏽‍♂️

Sgt Peppers was released 50 years ago, and despite being priced 5 times higher than PR's most expensive edition, despite being hugely reedited in 2009, sold 3 times more than PR deluxe the 1st week of release. eek

.

Even U2's Joshua Tree sold better, and worldwide, I think OK computer's sales this week will be above those of PR.

.

I let you imagine what 1999's deluxe sales would be, if it is ever released...WB won't re-release other albums from Prince.

But Prince sold millions of albums/singles just last year at this time immediately after his death, set all kinds of records on the charts with Purple Rain leading the way. Despite a few new songs, people feel they already have this album. Of course, no promo for it doesn't help. sad

Because of zero promo, even Prince's fans doesn't know it exists. They didn't even bother to recertify the album ! That's incredible.

.

A #1 in the Uk and in the US would have created some hype, to last in the charts. Even if it's in the top 10 this week, next week it will be out of the top 40.

.

With promotion, it could have sold 5 times more, and make some buzz for future releases.

.

My guess is that WB gave up promoting it at all because :

.

1. The Universal lawsuits wasn't ended up till today,

.

2. 4EVER, despite lots of tv adds sold only correctly in the US and in the Uk (and in Netherland)

.

3. The material' source given in this released is too controversial to be promoted overtly (mostly the source doesn't come from the master, the Syracuse dvd isn't remastered at all, the 1st avenue live couldn't be released, most of the songs are not from this era, etc.).

.

But there was clearly a market in the US, and huge potential numbers with a minimum of promotion.

i hope one day, some insider will explain the reasons why this project was screwed up by WB.

Don't predict, just wait for the numbers at the end of the week. Joshua Tree sold 62,000 in it's debut, the world wide numbers and U.S. numbers are not in yet...

Hits Daily Double

1st week U.S. sales 67% in

Physical sales : 18,903

Plus streaming: 20,403

You can still see that Prince's streaming numbers are way below standards, for him as a legacy artist... He can too late to streaming platforms... Most artists get a minimum 20k - 30k boost with streams added on to the sales, but Prince only has 2k boost with his streaming numbers... Good news though is 95% of people are buying his albums rather than streaming them which is almost the exact opposite for the modern artists today...

Still #1 on Amazon, and has moved up to #18 on the best selling albums of the year on Amazon. Does anyone have any idea how large a precentage of the overall physical CD sales come from Amazon?

Didn't think it would flop so hard. If PR won't sell, none of the others will. I wonder if new vault albums would fare better than remaster projects.

So I wonder how that threatens the fate of future releases. Is there a way to make more people care about them without his involvement? I hope the estate assembles some kind of marketing team. His music doesn't deserve being virtually ignored.

It didn't get near the press that OK Computer and Sergeant Pepper reissues got. I would have not bought either of those without reading about how good they were and some other details. PR Deluxe didn't even get enough reviews to merit a listing on metacritic.

That's the conundrum... If PR his biggest album doesn't sell for the first major release of his back catalouge... What's the market for his future Vault Releases? 40 -50K middle aged Prince fans??

They will not consider this to be a flop. Prince would immediately be one of the top selling Warners artists and they'll get more albums ready for release in the future. All the numbers mean is to slow the pace of Prince music in the market. But 30k-50k in sales every year, Warners will take it.

!) The reason for the no remaster of the concert footage is because they probably will remaster later and release the concert on bluray by itself.

2) They probably will release deluxe only versions of his other albums since the general public wouldn't be interested in just a remastered version of his other albums. So, there probably wont ba the option that Purple Rain was given.

Just a guess.

It's no flop and the more you document his legacy, the better for his body of work. It's too bad the Estate situation complicates things -- those song will be released eventually because there's little precedent for that kind of intellectual property to just die off without much of a peep.

And to think just two years ago, many of us believed Prince would outlive us and keep the Vault shut.
