I'm sure more people will go for a physical version, including dvd or vinyl. It's Prince, not a One Direction or Justin Bieber release. |

It would be a flop if, with sales usually lower in the summer, this release doesn't achieve to be #1 in the US, at least in term of physical sales. |

Well it there was a lack of major promotion, don't know why... But tell me ROD... The last deluxe edition from a legacy act that debuted at #1? ... Not many... |

You're right.
.
THRILLER 25 debuted at #2 but #1 worldwide...SGT PEPPERS at #3 but #1 in the Uk. Purple Rain sells only in the Us. A little bit in the Uk. And that's about all.
.
This is the first reedition of Prince, the first release since his death, and his only album that people usually buy. Purple Rain is one of the 15 best selling album in the US of all time. And like I said, sales are low in this season. |

No streaming numbers are shown, there is a section that says TOP 20 ALBUMS meaning most streamed albums, which is updated every few hours. |

Yes, but Sgt Peppers is priced higher - up to 5 times Purple Rain's most expensive edition.
Sgt Peppers also had been remastered in 1987 and 2009. It haslo had been re-relesed in Europe in the press for a very low price.
.
Thriller 25 cost the same price than Thriller 25, which contained only 1 unreleased song.
.
But, anyway...
.
The point with Purple Rain is that this release is a key point for Warner to sell other re-releases after. Because contrary to MJ and the Beatles, who have many big selling albums in the US and worldwide, Prince has an-almost US audience only, and even there, Purple Rain is his only solid seller. |

UK Midweek Official Chart Update has Purple Rain re-entering the Top 100 at No 5. Final chart will be out on Friday. Purple Rain's ultimate high in the UK was No 4 achieved April 2016, previous to that was No 7 in 1985. |

YOu're wrong. Prince is a sales phenomenon in the US, but outside, his sales are very low.
Following his death, 75 % of the sales were in the US. As we are talking about Purple Rain, after his death it sold 680.000 copies worldwide, including 500.000 in the US...That says a lot.
.
1999 is almost a good catalogue seller for Prince in the US (it sold almost 200.000 copies last year), but outside, nobody cares.

1st official numbers and sales :
Uk midweek charts :
Albums
1 Radiohead - OK Computer ^ 17,495 2 Imagine Dragons - Evolve * 13,030 3 Ed Sheeran - ÷ (Divide) 10,086 4 Royal Blood - How Did We Get So Dark? 8,835 5 Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain ^ 8,320
.
Interesting to see that the #1 is a re-release, that sold 2 times more than Purple Rain.
.
By the end of the week, it is likely PR will be out of the top 5, if not top 10 (1st day sales are higher).

Surely that must have had something to do with Prince being an US artist and the abundance of news items on his death appearing in the US media at the time? There must have been considerably less coverage on it in most European countries.
Not to mention, Americans have more disposable income than people elsewhere in the world and can justify themselves buying the records of an artist that has just died just because everyone else does that too. It wasn't really the fans that bought the records then.
You're probably right in a sense though. Prince sold more records outside the US between 1985-95 (or so), but not necessarily later. Musicology was a phenomenon only in the US. He's always had a lot of fans in countries like Sweden and the Netherlands though.

The only Princes album that sold more outside the US are Diamonds and Pearls and Lovesexy. SOTT, Batman and Parade sold about the same amount in the US and outside.
.
There is not even a possible comparison with singles sales, that were always way higher in the US than outside for Prince.
.
You're right, he is a good seller in Netherlands. Too bad it's a small market.
.
His death was highly covered for days in the french medias, I can at least tell you that. Much more than George Michael. But TVBO sold only 30.000 ex and Purple Rain 20.000 last year. Very poor results. |

I think Come most likely did better in Europe and the rest of the world than in the US. The Wiki page that I just checked doesn't list the sales from any other countries than France and the UK though. Most of his albums from the early-90s, including the Hits collections, charted higher in the UK than in the US. Chart positions can only tell you so much, of course.
To be honest, 20,000 + 30,000 album units for those two old releases in France doesn't sound that bad to me.
The re-released version of OK Computer selling so much more than Purple Rain in the UK wasn't surprising, but I was kind of hoping PR would have outsold it.
