Prince Wrote About Women In a Way That Most Contemporary Male Artists Still Can't

Women usually exist in men’s songs as passive objects, which is to not exist at all. With Prince, they were addressed with awe and empathy.

You take it for granted listening to him, but when you really pay attention to how he talks about women versus other artists, then and now, it's quite a difference.

First example that comes to mind is Darling Nikki. In the song, Nikki seduces him, takes him back to her place, leaves before he wakes up, and then leaves her number. That's the exact reverse of how one night stands are usually portrayed in culture. And this was 1983/4. Even today when male singers talk about a forward woman, it's ultimately the guy deciding to let her approach him or be on top of him. And even that's rare.

U fall in love 2 fast and hate 2 soon
And take 4 granted the feeling’s mutual

It doesn't start out tender for sure. And by the end he's talking about the sun the moon and the stars and how beautifully complex women are...But yeah, carry on...

Not like I love my guitar....

Yep, right after he got through juicing in her after yelling out the ills of the world with each thrust upon her. Miss me with that oh after he was so nice.

You got an early start today. lol

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I think he was trying to acknowledge, nurture and love his feminine side too.

This is for the cab you have to drive for no money at all
This is for why I wasn't born like my brother, handsome and tall
This is for politicians who are bored and believe in war
This, yeah, that's for me, that's who that one's for
This is for discrimination and egotists who think supreme
And this is for whoever taught you how to kiss in designer jeans
That one's for, that one's for, for you have to live
This one's for the rich, not all of 'em, just the greedy,
The ones that don't know how to give
This one's for Yosemite Sam and the tourists at Disneyland

So he comes here right?

And then all these thrusts are just pillow talk:

And this one oh yeah, that's the one
That's for that's for the, the creator of man
This is for the sun, the moon, the stars, the tourists at Disneyland
This is for the ocean, the sea, the shore
This is for and that's for you, and that's who that one's for
This is for the women, so beautifully complex
This one's for love without sex
This is for the wind that blows no matter how fast or slow
Not knowing where I'm going
This galaxy's better than not having a place to go
And now I know (I know)

Okaaaaaay.

Not like I love my guitar....
