organic, minimalist Prince. I sometimes think this the true test of a musician is what they are able to do without bells and whistles, collaboraters etc. Sometimes...not always. Musicans probably should be able to be both minimalist and large scale.
Here's one of my favorites minimalist Prince performances... https://www.youtube.com/w...GLbjuB0b2c
I think maybe that is the direction he needed to go in more and more had he survived. Intimate (like the Piano and Microphone tour). Subtle shifts rather than big statements. Personal rather than conceptual. Utilization of silence/nuance rather than the walls of sound.
What 'minimalist' performances do you all like? (Please don't say When Doves Cry because he took out the baseline...LOL).

I would like to continue this thread..BUMP..
I would like to hear more about people's opinions on the best minimalist Prince songs.. I am feeling bummed that his specific talents are not being really discussed.
HOw can I say this..if there is a blog about say Marlon Brando, people talk about a particular scene or bit of acting they enjoy, his method, his technique, his quirks in front of the camera. They don't spend the whole time talking about the lighting guy's ability to frame his face or the director's ability to draw out his talents. Yes, I am making a point here... I am tired of the constant reminders of the contributions by his associates to Prince's success but the lack of real analysis of Prince's actual technique and pure talent.
Prince, taking CLose and Slow, a song he wrote as a young man, and filling it with beautifully played and subtle guitar licks while singing in a nuanced and tender falsetto...Who cares? I guess--especially if Prince is not letting Wendy and LIsa co-create (or creat-- depending on what you believe) a funk folk new wave psychdelic wall of sound around it..

[Edited 5/22/17 17:28pm] [Edited 5/22/17 17:30pm] I feel your sentiment. This site is truly frustrating. My sister who's now a huge P fan refuses to come on here because she really dislikes a lot of the vibe ommmited from those who frequent this space. I've tried on occasion to start discussions on simple debates regarding P but it seems if it's not provocative or doesn't involve pics or rare video everyone is like been there done that. I'll say this regarding Ps minimalism. No one or very few could do it like him. Because his voice was multi dimensional his production struck a chord that while others like MJ could produce more catchy and hence more euphoric tunes they came as as drenched in syrup and were highly contrived while P was more of a connector to different places in your mind. Places you weren't aware that you had until he exposed it to you. He is much like the Beattes or Led Zeppelin in that sense.

Most of his albums and even protege albums were a one man band project, theres no doubting his skill and craft when it comes to making songs. As for his minimalist music, his funk music is entirely minimalist. Funk as a music form is primarily minimalist. It started with James Brown, maybe Prince's biggest influence musically,Mj's aswell. All funk is minimalist.Hip Hop and Techno are minimalist too but more so than Funk, but thats a different discussion.
