I've always thought the "pop goes the music" line was a brilliant one.

I always assumed it was an allegory for WB (big white rabbit, corporate Bugs Bunny) wanting more Purple Rain popular radio fodder and him telling them to fuck off by sacking the Revolution. Colour green making friends leave is not only envy, but money.

Doesn't it refer to Harvey, the big white talking rabbit from the James Stewart film of the same name? https://en.m.wikipedia.or...vey_(film)

Colour green making friends leave is not only envy, but money. I think people have mentioned it is a slight at Morris Day. "The colour green will make your BEST FRIEND leave you. It'll make him do THE WALK. 'The walk' being a Time track. And i believe Morris had an album called 'the colour of success'. I always thought the 'Pop goes the music' part was a slight reference to
The English Nursery Rhyme “Pop, Goes the Weasel” Half a pound of tuppenny rice, Half a pound of treacle. That’s the way the money goes, Pop! goes the weasel. Because as a child we'd sing the nursery rhyme and make a pop sound, with a finger in the side of our mouths (not sure if I'm explaining that well) after singing the "Pop" word. And in the background after Prince sings "Pop" there seems to be that familiar pop sound. Or maybe I'm imagining it [Edited 5/18/17 12:38pm] Grits and gravy, cheese eggs and jam...
Butterscotch clouds, a tangerine and a side order of ham.

It's a reference to music sounding better when you're buzzed

I always thought it was straightforward, and a more positive version of the lyrics he started in the original 'Old Friends 4 Sale'. .

It's Bugs Bunny the Warner Bros mascot...I always thought it was about WB stopping Crystal Ball. Then the next part is about everybody being gone at that time (maybe Morris) since he throws in "It'll make you do The Walk".

The color green.I thought he was referring to money. Pop goes the music...when the big white rabbit begins to talk. Maybe hes referring to pop music culture and drug use/halucinating(white rabbit begins to talk)

A reference to coke and Morris/Chicks foray with it. Friends etc
and Wizard Of Oz Alice In Wonderland fable influence [Edited 5/27/17 12:16pm] "Climb in my fur."
