John Nelson & Sharon Nelson Interview A Current Affair sat down back in the day to chat with John Nelson and Sharon Nelson. It is so rare to find videos of his dad talking about him. https://youtu.be/Byr-TaMi0gA

It's really just tied into another thread, it doesn't have it's own.

That was horrible and very disrespectful to do to Prince. One thing that is clear, Prince was born with his talent cuz his father does not sound a bit like him. Both his father and sister appeared jealous of Prince. His sister was guessing on the answers to those questions. [Edited 5/2/17 20:10pm]

Ah, yes--A Current Affair... I remember that trashy show well. I've never seen this though. It's interesting to see and hear the father and sister speak. That's the first time I saw Sharon. Definitely some envy there. But some insight into his childhood influences as well. And, damn, everybody looks so young! [Edited 5/2/17 20:10pm] I wish Prince hadn't felt it necessary to maintain a relationship with his father. He seems downright toxic. Poor Prince. But the son-father bond is such a strong need. I understand what it must have meant to him to have his fathers love, support, and approval so he wasnt going to banish his father from his life. And his "siblings" are just ick. Most of them anyway seem icky. Just the vibe i get. It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

Ikr lol And how about when they referred to him as "Rogers Nelson" like "Prince" wasnt even his real given name?! 13 minutes of pure bullshit. It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

I remember watching this at the time and thinking she was such an asshole her and the reporter who is just dying for her to give up some dirt.

thanks, that's one of the ones i never got to see and supposedly the one which left John on the outs with Prince.

I actually felt for Prince's father--- the interviewer was so disrespectful, throwing shade because he's played for burlesque girls - which the interviewer kept calling strippers and acting like it was some shitty gig. I think the father was very respectful about the dancers. Now I see why Prince didn't like to talk and didn't want his family talking. They try to make things into something they're not.

Pretty sure Ozzy Osbourne is referred to as "Prince of Darkness". Those two aren't even comparable!

once my father got upset that I was watching some Prince video and he said "Isn't he called the Prince of Darkness?" I said "No that's Ozzy, they call Prince 'His Royal Badness.'" And he was all "That's just as bad." (I was 15) "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

The interview as bad as it was showed some true colors there. Have nothing but admiration for Prince.

I wonder if this was the one I thought I dreamed? I had just had surgery and all I remember was it was one of these shows and that over the credits someone was singing a version of "Purple Rain." But that would have been in 88 or 89...not 91... hummm "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

this was 1990s right after Graffiti Bridge was released
and Prince was in full cloistered in Paisley Park mode.

Interesting to see and hear John Nelson. Him sitting by the piano talking makes me think of the scene in UTCM where Christopher Tracy sits by the piano in Mrs Wellingtons house. The wooh is on the one!

I'm glad I found this because John L talks about his playing-for-stripper days. That's important to Prince's history. FUck what Sharon' saying I don't argue with people about my opinions. Scram. I said what I said.

Yup. I wish a REAL reporter had interviewed John. I would like to hear him speak more about his own music, what it meant to him and his life, and how that influenced Prince. A big bleh to Sharon. I can't totally see that dark/darkness thing. She obviously speak about privacy for which Prince always craved... i mean, he sings:
'All I ever wanted, to b left alone See my beds made up at night Cuz in my dreams I roam'

Oh pulease! Those lyrics were recent and that interview was from the 80s. It's obvious that Sharon wanted to denigrate Prince during the waspish reporter's questioning. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Am I hearing things or did Sharon Nelson, the lady some people believe the song "Sister" was about, just say in that video that Prince had a "nice little body"? Awkward.
I really hope these interview sound bites are taken a bit out of context. She called him short, perverted, spoiled, the prince of darkness...Geez. I read somewhere that Sharon did eventually apologize to P. She damn well should have. At best, she was being irresponsible and careless with her words in an attempt to be funny or get attention (much more so than a vague song by Prince ever was). At worst, she was being cruel and overly vindictive..
