Why is there no sign of Darling Nikki extended? That should have been on the Vault CD, at least!
They're missing the boat with these releases. |

Warner Brothers and the estate are totally disappointing.
You're complaining because material that you have acquired illegally is being released officially? What it comes down to is that we're all a bunch of thieves and we're whining that WB doesnt think we're special. What a bunch of cry babies. This is a great release. The fact that the deluxe edition takes the bootleg owning snob fanbase into consideration at all should be applauded. I'm happy with this. Fabulous release and I'm excited about it. However, for WB to dangle a '2 full concerts from the vault' carrot, then only deliver 1(which most of us already have or have seen albeit in slightly lower quality) is Very deflating! I have the Japanese LD of this concert and not sure this new release could be much better than that. I'm hoping WB will in fact release an additional standalone concert release, which one could argue, aligns with their earlier statement. Not holding my breath though! |

Good question! Someone on here in a thread (forgive me if you're reading this) talked about how it might have been captured on BETA which was a better resolution than VHS. If someone had the original BETA, it's a better source to work with to tweak it. I don't really hold out hope for that, though. The video is tinny and high treble and needs a boost of bass, and some color correction. I don't think they did any of that, but we'll find out. It was never on DVD before, so that's the pull, not that the concert itself was remastered; just that it's now on a DVD.
"a never-seen on DVD of Prince and The Revolution Live! in 1985" That's the rub.
urgh, exactly. it's like every press release and statement you can't take at face value anymore, you have to read the small print, and analyse it carefully before you come to any sort of conclusion.
although, what we're learning from this release is that they will give us the minimum they can get away with - AFTER they promise double
electric intercourse is great soundquality, no complaints there. that's great. but there are many things about this release that are shoddy.
and then the official site says "This is Prince’s final word on his definitive masterpiece."
Maybe Donald Duck (oops I mean Donald Trump) or Spicey is the spokesman for WB re this stuff - ie don't take anything said or confirmed as literal or at FAce Value. [Edited 4/28/17 14:56pm] |

Obviously sound quality and packaging will be the final decider on this but I would say this is a good release. The issue is clearly that Warners told us we would be getting more and therefore set our expectations and Many of us are now disappointed In the Rolling Stone article it said... When we make any of Prince’s music available to fans - from the hits to unreleased gems - we are committed to upholding Prince’s high creative standards and we know fans will be thrilled when they hear these albums and see these films," Warner Bros. Records CEO Cameron Strang said in a statement. You don't get a more senior source than that to quote! He said albumS and filmS plural (yes albums could mean Purple Rain itself). [Edited 4/28/17 11:26am]
Could very well be that The First Avenue concert and other vault material are in the Estate's hands and since the WB deal technically covered WB catalog material, they needed permission.
I'd heard at some point that WB Purple Rain release was a special deal when it came to the deluxe project - separate from their distribution of the rest of the WB work and that Universal (or whoever takes over if they bail) would handle all other vault stuff.
All that being said, it could be that what we waited for is in the hands of the estate waiting for negotiation. |

30/35 euros for one disc of unreleased music no thanks. Are they crazy ?
I hoped there was the two lives in blu ray - but schokingly, there is only 1 dvd (!!). We are not in 2004 anymore...What is the point in remastering a video tape in 2017, if it is not for a HD release ?
That still proves WB can't make a real good deluxe edition, even more than one year after Prince's passing...and this is for Purple Rain ! The only Prince popular album worldwide.
.
WB missed the point, like Sony missed the point with MJ's posthumous release. Commercially, MJ's release never recovered from it, to the point where they don' even want to release unreleased track anymore. Because nobody buys them.
.
WB could make a music video of EI, using footage from the live version. But they won't do that. They are really lacking commercial sense.
I can't believe they waited more than one year for this disappointment. It could have easily been released last year.

I'll be a crushing bore and point out 'Star Trek - The Next Generation' was filmed on video and was remastered to an amazing quality for Blu-Ray. Obviously money was spent to achieve those results. WB were never going to do that with a Prince concert.
Hate to point this out too, but it seems there are MJ fans who remaster his old videos and concerts, but Prince doesn't seem to have fans putting in the same effort.

Agreed. Take press releases with a pinch of salt.
Boots are great, but surely the aim is to own these tracks in pristine quality. The fact that this release includes The Dance Electric, Electric Intercourse, Our Destiny / Roadhouse Garden, Possessed, Wonderful Ass, We Can Fuck and Father's Song means that it has already well exceeded my expectations. I'll be dancing round the house for weeks when it comes out.
As for the 'missing' DVD... I'm glad it doesn't include the First Avenue '83. That deserves its own release. [Edited 4/28/17 15:51pm] |

What the actual fuck?
The First Avenue concert, which served as the basis for the Purple Rain album, shouldn't be released on a Deluxe Edition of Purple Rain?

Apparently TNG was actually shot on 35mm film originally and that was what was scanned for the blu-ray release, while they redid the the special effects or something like that, not 100% sure of the details. I guess my point is that I thought it was impossible to "remaster" old stuff shot on video to modern HD? Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...

You're probably right, I just read the effects only were originally shot on video and replaced, the main bulk of it was on film. I own lots of UK TV from the 70's/80's on DVD that was originally filmed on video. There's not much that can be done with video. Oh well.
It'll be interesting to see some screenshot comparisons between the Syracuse DVD and the VHS. Syracuse was on laser disc too if i recall. Maybe they used that as a starting point. Maybe a slight improvement then.

Nice to hear the studio version of EI, and it certainly has its charm, but I do hope the live version gets an official release at some point, as it's the definitive version of the song and one of his most sublime moments. I can see why they opted for this, to dangle something new and shiny before expectant fans, but I kinda think it should have been the live version that was included on this set.
Perhaps Warners are holding back the First Avenue concert for a proper release at a future date - DVD and CD; versions with and without overdubs, etc. (Ok, probably not, but a guy can dream....)
As a Good Sir said above, how much of a bunch of whiners have we become?
Studio and live are perfectly complementary. There's no definitive in this precise case. A guy ot there made a compilation with the 3 versions (studio, live, rehearsal) and it proves the strength of the composition. It stands the multiple angles test. Studio and live, or live and studio, They're A-side and B-side, you pick your favorite. But to deny this is more than a demo (then that makes "Forever In My Life" what?) than something that could have landed on a double PR , that it is one of his top vocal deliveries and sparse arrangements... The intro and outro alone make for it. Really, give it some spins.
Curiously, I always found EI '83 live over the top. Now that I have the studio craft, I'm lovin' the live take way more. This song is supposed to be over the top, and "Condition Of The Heart" is a sophisticated evolution of Prince at his most vocally unabashed, and he's incredible. The people not in the know do not realize he's one of the best singers ever, female and male combined.
Man, he was 25. When you think Prince could not astonish you more, he shows you a secret entry in his journal. That surprised everyone. I'm glad to see praises from hardcore fans. What a happy sad month.
The PR box we all dream of will probably be around 2024.
Please let's stop whining, ad hominem, urbis and fucking orbis ; We gotta lotta butter 2 go. I'd say, what a smooth entrance to 7 years of harsh, cruel, unmerciful wait (Lovesexy Deluxe, SOTT Deluxe, Around The World In A Day Deluxe) for "Purple Rain - The Complete Sessions - Vol I". Ah la la, 2 B a Prince fan...
[Edited 4/28/17 13:27pm]
See, I find this sort of mannered little disquisition far more dispiriting to wade through than I would imagine anyone found my rather gentle and good-natured comment on the tracklist to be - but, as with so many things in life, I guess it's different strokes for different folks. I'm actually very happy to hear the new track, and already more than sold on the upcoming release, so I don't feel terribly in need of an over-eager homily about the importance of counting my blessings. But then I don't imagine anyone does, do they? [Edited 4/28/17 17:39pm] "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." - James Baldwin |

All right, finally listening to Electric Intercourse. There's some moments around the 2:30-2:40 period that got the Oh Good Lord response, so I'm pretty happy about this. Even if that synth line makes me think of the end of If the Kid Can't Make You Come (I'm not saying it's the same, just that I'm thinking of it). It's certainly more interesting than I expected from the live/rehearsal versions. Thumbs up.
Now I've got to listen a bunch more times. |
