Laura posted this interview with Perry "PJ" Jones in this thread : http://prince.org/msg/7/442066
This interview tells about how WB basically made him P's manager after Husney left to keep P from going with Bob Marley's manager. It adds a bit more insight cuz P lived with PJ after Husney and while WB was getting Bob Cavallo ready to manage P.
It was a very crazy time after For You and just before PRINCE.
There's also a story about the PRINCE nekkid/pegasus photoshoot. (PJ was there).
There's also a bit about Q and P's first encounter, and it wasn't the one you're probably thinking about regarding another young male performer who was born in Indiana.
That was a big part that was left out of this book.
Somebody like Perry would never talk to Alex in a million years. |

I always wondered who the "competition" in New York was..if you remember, Prince was given a gold guitar as "payola" to sign with someone else while he was mulling over whether or not he was going to go with Owen/WB..I think this podcast just answered my question after all this time (I'm about 1/4 of the way through the podcast)..sounds like the competition was Bob Marleys manager/company. Was that the "bombshell"?...maybe I'm confused on that...the problem was that Prince was going over budget with "For You"...going listen to the rest of the podcast [Edited 5/8/17 20:06pm]
The bombshell is WB hooking Prince up with Cavallo.
The record company should never have selected the management of the artist it is a conflict of interest to do this. Keep in mind WB did not go to Prince directly and say that here is a firm we think you should check out. They decided that Cavallo would be his management and had Cavallo send a represenative to him.
Cavallo then received 10k for taking Prince on as a client (WTF)
Remember the mgmt is handling the artist's money and suppose to be working on behalf of the artist when dealing with the record company making deals in the best interest of their client not looking out for WB.
I always wondered how come Cavallo and company never tried to get Prince his master well now we know why.
Pepe Wille said years ago he hooked Prince up with Don Taylor who worked for Chris Blackwell. I do not think the gold guitar was payola. Payola was paying record lables to play certain records on the radio to get maximun radio play.
This was Prince looking for mgmt which WB has no business interfering with at all. I now wonder when Perry found out about this and when he told Prince about it.
Thanks for posting that podcast, Laura! It was very informative and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It was an "inside view" of what transpires and what did with Prince. I agree, the gold guitar was not "payola", I was tired and confused last night Thanks again, I really enjoyed listening to the podacst

Ahhhhh...That has flown directly over my head all this time, from early in the 1980s when I read a P bio that casually mentioned P's management team, it never occured to me that it was anything odd...but thinking about it all this time later, you're right.
Wow. That's crazy.
I wonder how many industry types knew this and just either ignored it or went [Edited 5/9/17 9:55am] |

I do not know were the gold guitar came from and I have no idea why that would make him go with any manager.
I love that this is coming out so people can stop making Prince out to have been some nut bar for putting slave on his face. Yes it was extreme tactuc but it worked and WB got what they deserved in the end. A lable that lost so much money for the parent company that it got sold off just to get off their balance sheet and now has been sold yet again.

I have no idea where it came from either, my thoughts are that P was like "look what I got" , and used it as a tactic. He was very schrewd, even back then.
I agree- I'm glad it's coming out as well, P had a reason for erythang he did...whether we understood it at the time or not.
I know this is off topic, but just a few weeks ago, Sylvester Stallone sued WB for "doctoring" their books and he found out about it. He was supposed to get 20% when all was said and done and only got 10% because WB lied and said they were in the red on the movie that SS is suing for. |

WB has lotsa karmic fubars to settle.
Over time I've come to see that P has set some ish in motion that WB will not be happy about as things play out.
It's definitely gonna be interesting to watch.

I think WB had lawyers at the table just like Prince had. WB is not ones suing UMG is going to sue if they do not get their money back. I could see WB trying to get the license deal going forever I could even see them trying to make an offer for the master tapes to buy them back but right now that are not the ones crying. |

People wanting to get stuff off their chest or, in the worst case scenario, having an axe to grind (in which case info may not necessarily be 100% reliable). The hard part of the puzzle is putting the pieces in place and connecting the dots. Right now I'm trying to connect the firing of Cavallo and the start of the Slave era. There was quite some time in between. |

It looks like the Authors might have done an interview with Paul Mitchell.

I do not doubt she dated Paul but Prince seems like he was a sneaky girl stealing dude even at a young age. I know Andre has discussed how they competed for the same girls with Prince pursuing girls he was already dating. He could have been running around with her without Paul's knowledge only making it known to him later.
I know numerous time she has been refered to has his high school girlfriend so has Susan Moonsie. I think he got around even back then or just has a lot of friends who were girls.
Page 127, despite Prince having a crush on Kim Upsher all thru his high school years he deffered to Paul Mitchell, now with Mitchell no longer in the picture, he & Kim had a passionate affair. [Edited 5/9/17 15:39pm] |

Right. If you read the T.C. Ellis interview, T.C. said Prince told him to get a 3 album deal because WB had several different sets of books (accounting). So he knew they were ripping him off from the beginning. He also said in the Tavis Smiley interview that he did not know "to this day" (2009) exactly how much Purple Rain made.
Like you said, I've always known P did things for a specific reason. He didn't BS his was through the industry and live in it for 40 years without learning a thing or two. That goes for his private life as well. He knew exactly what and why he did something. God is my Sugar Daddy. |

What Paul told me is that Kim was his high school girlfriend and that Prince did have a girlfriend in high school (not Susan). Kim was the girlfriend Prince wanted but couldn't have. Once Prince graduated and started making it in music, things changed and a relationship with Kim became a possibility. |

Of course! Yes, we did speak to Paul directly. I think what came through for me was that high school Prince was had aspirations for himself and was highly driven -- but frustrated by trying to keep pace with Paul and Duane, popular athletes. All that changed once he got his record deal. |

No one said the information did not come from Paul however for the last almost 30 years Kim has always been refered to as his high school girlfriend by many of Prince' s schoolmates.
Some how this story got out and it was not Prince who was talking. I think he was probaly seeing her undercover because there is another story that Andre dated her and that he stole her from Dre going so far as to flaunt in Dre's face. Maybe the story got turned around a Dre's name got out instead of Paul. Remember this info is in DMSR. |

Yeah, stories get told over and over and names get swapped out for other names - happens all the time. Based on our interview with Paul Mitchell, Kim was not Prince's high school girlfriend. She was indeed a friend from high school, but only after high school did she become a girlfriend. |

Like I said someone told Per and it has to be someone from his peer group. You guys need to take it up with Per and stop assuming after his death that people who grew up with him do not want a little attention.
I have dug up a few books that I had in storage and I will take a look and see what they say.

Huh? You are the one who keeps mentioning Per's book, maybe you need to take it up with him. I don't really care what the other books say, right now we are discussing this one. One of the author's told you the source of info and that they spoke with him directly. Believe what you want to believe, even when facts are slapping you in the face. |

On the first page of Ch. 10, Tommy Vicari is compared to a "villain." : "Prince, while pleased that he would endure no meddling from a villain like Tommy Vicari..."
Here I couldn't tell if the authors were referring to Prince's opinion of Vicari (knowing that Prince disliked him and treated him badly when Vicari was his exec producer), or if this was a general opinion of Vicari? I know Prince didn't like his meddling in his first album but did I miss other references to Vicari that would qualify him as a villain? I didn't remember reading any others so this sentence confused me.
Prince enjoyed Dez Dickerson's company and they seemed to share a real camaraderie. I wasn't aware of the influence he had on Prince. I remember thinking Dez was a cool member of the Revolution when he came into the band.
Prince's interview with Dick Clark was cringe-inducing.

The Dick Clark story was interesting to me. According to the book, Prince's intention was to be difficult. For years I've heard this story told from the angle that Prince got "stage fright" realizing how many people were actually watching the broadcast and that was why he acted the way he did. |

Threre are no facts about this relationship unless we hear them from the two deceased people.
But you can find Kim referernce has his high school girlfriend in numerous books over the years.

I think her high school boyfriend, Paul Mitchell would know the facts. |
