So, it's long been debated about where the "look at the bargains over here ladies" line came from at the beginning of IIWYG. It was traced to a rapper in 1980, Spyder D "Big Apple Rappin'". Then, it can be heard on "Meadowlands" on Jefferson Airplane's 1969 The Volunteers of Amerika album (only in the right channel).

But if you go back five years from there, to an album called Authentic Sound Effects Vol. 10 from 1964, there is a New York street vendor track. That's the same one. It's on Spotify.

Prince also used the series of albums for "Pop Life" (the crowd noise), "I Wonder U" and/or "Do U Lie?" (I think), and "Lady Cab Driver" (the traffic sounds).

So that 1964 sound effect series is the original source. Vol 10, track 8. Track 31 is a wedding recessional and sounds like the same clip on IIWYG.

Yeah, I saw that one when I searched. But it wasn't. This dates to 1964, and it's pretty obvious it's the one. Apparently, it's a popular thing because it was used at least twice that we know of before Prince used it. Crazy how something so random gets picked at so much.

I imagine Eye Records will do a boot of this now and we'll see people on eBay paying $70 for a pressed CD copy of it.

for the longest time, in the media, books and mags, the crowd noise in poplife was said to be from the infamous live fiasco where he opened for the rolling stones.

Yeah, I remember those stories, but it was never true. That sampler might have it in there somewhere. The Wrestling Match track sorta feels like it, but there are cheers or "throw the bum out".

While I know they're not the same, the woman walking at the beginning of "Chili Sauce" reminds me of the walking sound on The Gold Experience.

He used one album. One. All of these sounds discovered so far are from one and the same album.

You should study up on your Prince history. It's well documented that when he was making 1999, he had access to a large sound effect library, and had fun using it. It's why you hear the baby at the end of "Delirious", the traffic sounds on "Lady Cab Driver", etc.

I used to edit porn back around 1999 or so. Our music guy came in with a sound effect set that was branded from Sony. It had the boxing sample from Pop Life, and the baby sample from Delirious. I think the sound effect set is still available.
