The scene in Purple Rain was written with Vanity in mind, her part even had her name in the script. And what begins as "rape" ends with her turning the tables.
So then one cannot name this scene as "rape" as no woman who has been through such a terrible traumatic experience, ever turns the tables or receives pleasure. [Edited 4/9/17 10:31am] |

I think Prince was the greatest musical star of our time.
That said as a man and if he wasn't an adored idol...he would have been considered an asshole, mysoginist and abusive. Immature and out of touch.
But we all have our faults.
I feel the whole Prince legacy is becoming life the argument that ensued on whether christ was divine or a messenger.
I like to remember the musician..the man seems like he was a dick. Sorry, but a lot of hardcore fans like myself are reading Mayte's book and its like finding out James Brown was a wife beater
r.i.p
every great man i've studied had some real faults, real faults. Elvis did an endless slew of bad things, I know about most of them but sometimes i'll stumble upon a new one. I read he dropped a couple girlfriends because he found out they dated black guys before, new one on me. but this same guy also bought motherfuckers houses, black and white, bought them cars, threw money at them. With Prince, the only thing that surprises me with the stories are how normal he sounds in some of them. Susan Rodgers makes him sound like just a regular dude who was serious about his job, no more, no less. Brenda fro V6 told a story of how she caught up to him on the musicology tour and she told him she had a son, he insisted he meet him and they talked music, finding out the kid played a saxophone, he scolded Brenda "he doesn't know who Charlie Parker is?" just so normal and so accessible. You'll never hear those kinds of stories about Elvis or Michael, at least I never have. Everything is just over the top with those guys, they never came down to earth. |

There was also this "funny" scene where Jerome threw a woman in a dumpster.
[Edited 4/7/17 14:56pm]
I think it's important to note the context of these scenes. Firstly, the slap. Or the smack. Or the back-hander or, as my mother would call it, the "jaw warmer" he gives Appolonia. The scene is included to show that if he continues on the path he's on, he'll end up just like his father, which is something he doesn't want to be.
Can you please explain why Apollonia doesn't DO ANYTHING BACK TO HIM???!! In all this time, I've *never* understood that.... is she THAT much in love with him??? Could it even be that women LIKE their men to be violent from time to time, even if, it is in fact THEM that they're being violent towards?? (sounds unbelievable, right?) - but, I mean, it proves that they're MEN, right?? Maybe women need reassurance of that from time to time..? - that is, what they're really looking to know is, if someone tries to harm them, this guy's not gonna take any shit, and will kick the SHIT out of that motherfucker in no time... - and for this *they're* willing to get knocked around, well, just a little? Out of love or something? Wow! Gets my head spinning just thinking about it.... |

And you DO realize that an abused woman is not mentally healthy enough to strike back at her abuser because she's had the shit beaten out of her for quite a long time. And no, they don't like it, they're just not capable of it without serious help.Good god, you really need to go research what abused women really go through. The fuck is wrong with you. uh oh, get ready to be attacked by the feminist brigade. but to your point, i think it was camille paglia, either her or some other feminist who did say that some women dig being smacked around. I've never understood it really either but, the nice guys i've known and the fuckups I've known seem to have different effects on women, the nice guys generally aren't respected or interesting, the fuckups bring drama and sometimes violence. But times have changed, men can't be violent to women without risking serious jail time so I'd say that it's not as common. Any man with any sense knows that all a women has to do in an arguement is pick up the phone and tell the cops the man smacked her and she fixes his ass real quick. Most times the cops will take the womans side. don't back me up all at once guys. |

She didn't hit him back because her hitting him back wasn't in the script. In order for The Kid to grow as a person, he has to come to the realisation that he's becoming like his father by himself. Otherwise, it doesn't work as drama. The Kid wants to change and become a better person. You can't have that change come from someone beating it into him. It must come from himself or it doesn't work. |

OK, let me just understand this. Step by Step. (cuz this is alien to me, this doesn't happen here in India..) Step no 1) Guy beats shit out of girl. 2) she doesn't DO anything - no cops, no yelling for neighbours' help, not even a phone call to her Dad/brother/other family etc. etc. Step 3) Guy....does it...... AGAIN!! ...and repeat!! Until it becomes, to use your phrase - "quite a long time"!! ....are you out of your fucking MIND???!! I would love to hear an explanation of the psychology behind this, by Americans/Westerners - cause, obfuckingviously, there aren't enough crazy people in the world already..... you guys are nuts like, genetically. |

I won't disagree that americans are nuts but from what we hear about india, that is a real hell on earth for a lot of people. One of my close friends just had two relatives come to america under dire circumstances, one guy had a girlfriend from the wrong religion and so the girls family killed her and tried to kill him, he escaped and ended up getting caught coming in from Mexico. Then, not even a year later another relative came over. Then, we hear about women getting raped, burned which is really sad because Indian women are just so lovely. Fact is, lots of places in the world women get treated like dirt, in china they used to kill girl babies. In america? well, I know violence against women happens but today, in my circle, it's more common to see the henpecked man getting his balls busted and getting his ass chewed by his wife than it is the other way around. Men are such pussies today. |

ya, wouldn't know, it's a big country with many different groups and languages so that makes sense. My friend was badly beaten by police in india for being a member of a certain sect so he came to america. I thought her point about not getting enough to eat was her way of saying that she wasn't being treated any better than any other band member even though they were questioning why she was even there. She never said Prince knew she was hungry and did nothing about it. She kicks herself in the butt for being dumb about things, but the pay docking over the whipped cream incident is a dick move, one he was known to make WAY too much. I want someone somewhere to step up and say he told Prince to kiss his ass when he pulled shit like this. |

i'm sure it happened many times, he and morris got into a fistfight, someone also insinuated on here that he and andre did too, the lawyer and him, randy phillips got into a fight when Phillips told him 'stop doing a&r with your dick". and as for women, i doubt wendy took shit from him without firing back, robin powers says she didn't take disrespect either. susan rogers also has a story of throwing her money at prince when he tried to fine her, she went off on him and he acted like it didn't even happen afterwards. at any rate, one thing I always think of is, would prince have been prince without being like that? I'm not so sure. It's not easy being a leader like that and trying to be liked at the same time anyway, bastards pretty much run things. |
