April 7 marks the 39th anniversary of the release of For You.

It's around the time that I heard of him. More with "I Wanna Be Your Lover", but "Soft and Wet" was sorta on my radar.

"I Wanna Be Your Lover" is the first Prince song I ever heard on the radio. I remember wondering at the time if it was Sylvester...

Must'va got that from reading Prince: The Story Behind Every Album Music Icons Collector's Edition...

My first Prince purchase was actually his second album and after that I decided I needed For You. Initially I felt that For You couldn't compare to Prince; but it eventually was able to hold it's own. During my time in the military, the keeper of my vinyls fell down on the job and my Prince collection was no more. After April this was the first purchase that I made in an attempt to rebuild what was lost. My Love is Forever was always my favorite. I don't know anything about overdubs, sound being too polished, etc, all I know is that this is when I fell in love with Prince so this album has a special place in my heart and is one that I can't really listen to without becoming a tad bit sad. And I like to think of this as the "true Prince"; not the persona/celebrity that later became known as "Prince".

yep 39 years ago tomorrow. but according to what i read the first single did not come out for 2 months...

mine too! and that was May 88...so tons of stuff... and magazines and posters too! all gone....

I had to sneak and buy my Prince cassette and keep it hidden. Ah, those were the days.

Hey, my grandmother drowned my cassette tapes when she found them. Luckily she didn't know much about cassette tapes. I came from a pretty strict background.

I had no idea Prince's first album "For You" came out 39 years ago. Who would have ever thought in their wildest dreams that he would become an icon, a musical genius and a rock and roll legend!!!

I can totally see that. Loved Sylvester. Used to sing at the Elephant Walk on Castro St when I lived nearby.

"For You"... deep love from me..

"For you", is brilliant soft-pop-rock-disco, hitting the disco wave in the late 70s.

Also the "Prince" LP (79), this album sounds the same, covering those genres.

I'm a huge fan, of the 2 first albums..

And ok it is not a secret.. what followed with "Dirty Mind" in 1980 up to 1988 with "Lovesexy" was even better, even more original.

It seems now the 2 first albums were more easy, but I loove the "disco" production a lot.

That long string of (is it 9 or even 10 with the Black Album), well that string of original albums just kept being different (each time of a release), and completely brilliant.

Prince was a huge genius.

Ps) My first album was "1999", then "Purple Rain" and "ATWIAD", then I did go back and found these 2 first albums, (and Controversy), wow I was amazed, the music is maybe more "innocent" (1978-79), still very funky.

I love 3 tracks (discohits) by Sylvester...:

1. Do You Wanna Funk (feat. Patrick Cowley)
2. You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) huge hit...
3. Dance (Disco Heat) "hypnotic" disco: covered by Prince in 2010, at Roskilde Festival in Denmark afaik/ by memory, hope I remeber this right?

Ohterwise I don't know much about Sylvester (maybe a bit off topic too?)

Thank you for posting this Adorecream. Love this guy, he has a great voice too. Lots of insights and points you can go back to because he gives the times. Interesting about the first extended jam ever being on this record.

what I hear on this one, I still hear in echoes on many songs/albums throught his career

I think every fan, new or old, should always refresh themselves on Prince's beginnings.
These songs, in the simplest way, you can hear throught his recordings throught his career

songs like Tangerine, She Loves Me 4 Me, When 2 R in Love, Kiss, hearken back to these demos and the first albums

Sylvester was the bomb. Trailblazer one-of-a-kind amazing artist. Taken too soon. If I knew who s/he was, Prince certainly did.

I got it from Pvault too... which is odd because normally the single comes out first and then the album....

Agreed. I almost wonder if they just sorta put it out thinking it might not do much or they were frustrated with his overspending and time consumption on it, but something caught on and they said "Hey, let's get a single out for this kid". But even in the late 70s, albums first wasn't necessarily the M.O. in a campaign.

As soon as you get the chance, go listen to Sylvester's live version (8:04) of "You are my Friend". That is one powerful, heartfelt song.
