Man, he plays four ATWIAD tracks at one of these gigs, a month before that album's release. Plus a song that is still unreleased, "Possessed". And this is Prince at his most "pop popular"; he played six concerts in this one venue in one week.

It reminds me of an interview with Wendy or Lisa or someone who noted that by the end of the Purple Rain Tour, "he couldn't wait to get ATWIAD out". Even I was done with PR by the end of 1985.

Found it - it was Alan Leeds in Rolling Stone (who had said it before):

"But the reality was he was sick of Purple Rain. He was sick of the show. We’d been on the road for eight or nine months doing the same show. Purple Rain was a blessing and a curse because the show was so scripted that you couldn’t really vary it from night to night. You couldn’t change the set list because the tour was by definition representative of the performance scenes in the film, which meant that the light cues, the production, everything was written in stone. And the fans would have none of it; they expected it to be verbatim. So it wasn’t the kind of tour where you could ad-lib and change the set list. His solution to that was to start doing lengthy encores where he could basically play what he wanted to play. It got to the point where we were just building in the cost of overtime in the venues into the budgets of the shows. Because by halfway through the year, we were spending thousands and thousand of dollars in overtime fees every night because the shows would go on till 12:30 in the morning with these long, long encores."

"eye don’t really care so much what people say about me because it is a reflection of who they r."

So Prince actually decided to open a concert with 17 Days? Pretty interesting choice and it's a great version, although oddly to me sounds like more like the kind of jam that he liked to play towards the end of a concert rather than something he would start the show with, is it certain that this is the correct running order?

They opened the 6.7.1984 Birthday show @ First Avenue with 17 Days

and on the March 4th 1985 Cow Palace San Francisco show + March 20th & 24th Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum show

The beginning of the first concert (17 Days) and the end of the 2nd concert (America) along with hearing him talking about and playing his new song Raspberry Beret were the unexpected highlights for me.

you sir need to hang on to these memories & remember the utter joy he brought to you during his peak years. I get you hated his decisions & music in latter years BUT screw that...every fan has a fave era...life's too short...ejoy the memories he left YOU with.

On a side note..listening to America on this set...how friggin fierce is that!!! Fuck yeah!!

God, Head on this is (as the kids say) giving me so much life. These recordings are incredible. With my headphones on and eyes closed I feel like I'm there.

The quality on these is stellar. And the piano intro to Raspberry is my jam!

And my new weakness is hearing Prince talk to and be playful with the crowd. His faux coyness is just a joy to hear.
