ALBUMISM SELECTS: Prince’s 10 Greatest Albums, Ranked & Revisited Though we know this will surely (and hopefully) spark some healthy debate, we’re thrilled to present the Albumism team’s consensus selections for the 10 Greatest Studio Albums in the late great Prince’s vast discography. Can't debate it. Including Diamond and Pearls over the superior Gold Experience seems to prove that this list was based off the music available on Spotify. A list based on incomplete information.

Sadly, that's the downside to a consensus Top 10. As you mentioned, my peers and I compiled this list based on what was available at the time (pre-GRAMMY announcement). And, yes, The Gold Experience and Art Official Age would be in my personal Top 10.

Thanks for your honesty. Didn't mean to 'sound' rude.
I actually place 3121, The Truth, The Gold Experience, and Art Official Age above Diamonds and Pearls.

I agree about SOTT,Parade & PR being Top 3. His best albums, hands down. |

Yes way. Gold Experience has less rap in it and more funk and rock. Love that album for SHHH alone.

I find rankings silly, in general. But it's nice to see Parade get some major love. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. |

Other than Diamonds & Pearls, looks primarily like a 80's list. |

These folks are well intentioned. But this is the problem I have harped on about for months--limited exposure to non-WB works.
The biggest travesty isn't that P's work is being released in a way he may not have approved of when he was alive. the biggest travesty is that the only music listened to of P's today is Warner Brothers. Its like they won and his battle was pointless. (hell, maybe it was pointless.)

In a way it was sometimes pointless because there IS something to be said about the machine backing your career up. Even with the way the world is today with many DIY venues to get play and be heard etc. It wasn't pointless though regarding peace of mind and a resurgence (that was originated with the big bad machie though). Prince was able to have it both ways ha. Signed and an Independent.

Tidal does seem to be a sidenote regarding the ownership/ legality of some of his catalogue but it did appear that he was in love with them and the owners (Jay, Beyonce, other artists oning). Sort of like a United Artists (the defunct film studio) record company. So for them to try and stake some claim isnt really surprising.

They will need to let him go if they care at all about his legacy. Prince's catalogue is not going to save Tidal especially people don't realize its even there.

Now that you menton it, I agree. I guess Tidal is going under? United Artists did, but after 40-50 years though. But it seems like the exact type of set up that would get Princes nose open.

We're doggin some WB compared to After Warner Bros (hereon referred to as AWB), but which awb release would you put in the top ten? Which AWB release is better than a WB release?

I would take out Lovesexy, Prince, and Diamond and Pearls and put it in Gold Experience, The Truth, and 3121. i like Lovesexy, Diamond and Pearls and Prince but I also find them flawed and not as consistently great as those albums. On the Truth album, I only dislike one songs (animal kingdom) and love how personal and stripped down the album is, on 3121, his melodies and grooves are great, on Gold Experience, there is invention, fearlessness and solid song writing (although some flawed songs--there is no Tony M.)

I agree that the list is generally a solid one but that AOA and TGE should have been on it instead of Diamonds and Pearls and perhaps Prince (though it was an important album, songwise I don't think it consistently shines). Chris, what two albums on the final list did you exclude on your own list if you don't mind me asking? |

Not exactly my placements, but quite a few of my choices are there. Purple rain would have been number one for me (sorry it's ground zero) LoveSexy would have had to be in the top five, and sad not to see Emancipation as that would have definitely been on the list! |

I love everything the man did but having said that any album where he or Tony or whatever MPLS cats are rapping is automatically out of the top 10. That was just not his lane. And also like the man said my only competition is me in the past. 80's Prince for me will never be topped by anyone including Prince. 1980-Present
