Other people doing PRINCE songs

Only a few artist covered Prince songs throughout his career Chaka Khan with "I feel for u", meli'sa Morgan "Do me baby" Sinead with "Nothing compares to u, Alicia Keys "How come you don't call me anymore?" Tom Jones "Kiss" I prefer the prince versions to most remakes anyone like the remakes better than the original?

Although I prefer Prince's version, I really like Mariah's cover of 'The Beautiful Ones'.

"I Feel For U" is the only remake even worthy of comparing to the original, and i still prefer the original...

Yup.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

A couple that I know of from the 90s that might be lesser-known:

>

The Hindu Love Gods (Warren Zevon & REM band) did "Raspberry Beret" which I thought was pretty good.

>

Semisonic did "Erotic City" which I thought was kind of weak.

>

One covers compilation that I'd like to get my hands on is the box set "Shockadelica" coming out of Norway that may have been a limited release and I'm not sure where it stood in terms of clearances with Prince, now his estate, and other contractually-represented entities.

>

Clever musicians can so some cool stuff with covers, even of Prince.

Unfortunately, hearing other people sing the songs is the only way to hear them live now. No one can compare to Prince...

The original version of his material always makes a cover sound unnecessary.he was a true original.

Only a few artists covered Prince? Uhhh, no. I can think of a dozen covers of "Purple Rain" alone.

Uhh I'm talking about the ones that actually made it on the charts not a karaoke type performance.

Most P songs are too idiosyncratic and uniquely purple to translate well in covers, but I recently heard this great cover tribute of Sexy MF by the psychedelic Mexican jazz band Troker...https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FsYSt44PGIQ

So true... In fact Chaka's version is the only one worth remembering even Sinead's version makes me cringe. St.paul's version will always be the definitive version.

That is probably one of the worst covers of his music I've ever heard as a one-off song.

Who said anything about karaoke? Making the charts reduces the numbers, obviously - but is also an extra criterion than in your original post.

Their version of The Time's "Get It Up" is pretty good, too. But IIWYG was a much better use of the song sample than Mariah's cooing like a pigeon in heat.

Art of Noise w/ Tom Jones' "Kiss" is fun, and a really new take on an otherwise difficult yet familiar song. I would have been nice to hear Prince do that version in concert. The Parade Tour or SOTT would have been a great setting for the horn-heavy arrangement.

i cover prince songs and people love it but... I realize that it isn't the same, anyway, I rarely like the covers, there are some outstanding ones but most of them I hate. Mariah's version of TBO is awful, not vocally, production wise, how pros like that could screw up the synth part on that is beyond me. I've been saying since he died, the best tribute to him is not trying to emulate him but to raise your own game, play your instrument better than before, sing better, write better, produce better, that is the best tribute to him.

I recently heard a cover of Gotta Broken Heart Again by Debra Hurd for the first time. Thought it was pretty good.

.

Apparently: "Debra’s version appeared on the Billboard Hot Black Singles chart on July 16, 1983. It made it up to #62 and was on the chart for 6 weeks."

Oh god, that Tom Jones gig -- I wanted that obnoxious leather getup his furry behind was wearing to go up in flames with him in it. The whole thing was just EW, NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE! I swear I had nightmares for a week after that crap there. Nah, brah, you do not do that. You don't look sexy, you look like an idiot, stop it. You need to cut it. You are BANNED, BARRED, FIRED. falloff

I actually really liked Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Comares rather a lot, though. It was great (and I SO wanted to cut my hair like hers when I saw that video. Unfortunately I was a teenager at the time and Mom vetoed that right there with the GTFOH QUICK. A decade later I did it, and haven't looked back. lol).

A lot of these listed here I haven't heard, though. Time to go youtubing! Except Mariah Carey. Her vocal registers are too much for mah ears, yo. Girl can sing, but gah, those whistle registers, yo! They kill my eardrums every time.

I imagine myself inside your bedroom; oh, I imagine myself in your sky.
