Prince outsold any other artist in 2016 I scanned the main page and didn't see this posted yet. This is heartwarming - nice to see the Prince love in action on this one

How do we define sales in the age of streaming? Reminds me of 1984 when 5 albums topped the chart and then once the record industry started using soundscan (in 1991 I think) you'd get dozens of albums that hit #1. I think in 2013 there were something like 40 albums that hit #1 throughout the year. Paisley Park is in your heart

Fake piece of information. Bowie sold more records than Prince in 2016. BLACKSTAR only sold 2 millions worldwide. According to the IFPI, Prince is "only" #9 in the top 10 of the world best selling artist in 2016. The Billboard article says US sales not world wide. Also, according to the criteria for ifpi it includes streaming. The independently verified IFPI Global Recording Artist chart includes sales of albums – across digital, CD and vinyl formats; singles, both downloaded and physical; and on-demand audio streams and music videos across the calendar year. The chart includes all the music of each artist featured, not just one track or album. It uses album equivalent units to combine measurements of downloads, physical sales and streams
Outside of Tidal Prince's music wasn't on streaming services in 2016 so not an apples to apples comparison. [Edited 4/21/17 8:37am] Paisley Park is in your heart

The title of the topic was misleading, because not referring specifically to the US. Albums and singles sales worldwide include streaming. Sad, but that's the way it is. |

Right which is why it's difficult to compare considering Prince wasn't on streaming services other than Tidal. Anyway I think mixing the two doesn't make sense. Especially when they use an arbitrary formula to derive sales equivalents. Just say these artists had the most streams and these artists had the most sales (physical or digital).
