Both amazing albums. But when I break it down track for track CONTROVERSY edges out for me.

Ps, it seems I am among the few here to love and appreciate JACK U OFF...?

And, I love (the song) SEXUALITY deeply, still it is loosing to the excellent (as well) WHEN YOU WERE MINE.

Same could be said about LET'S WORK, excellent song, however HEAD is just slightly better.

It's an OK track,but I think of it as more of a novelty song Prince recorded much better New Wave-styled songs than that one.

I skip some on DM but don't skip any on Controversy, so that one is the winner for me.

I think Do it All Night is massively underrated while simultaneously being probably the weakest track on Dirty Mind. It worked as a great opener on the Dirty Mind tour.

Me three! I have always loved Dirty Mind. It is when I went from a fan to a superfan! For me, it was a close call of Controversy over Dirty Mind (under-rated!) abd Gotta Broken Heart Again over Private Joy. If Do Me baby was switched with Do it All Night, Dirty Mind would be my absolute favorite of Prince's albums.

1. DIRTY MIND - CONTROVERSY Both are great but Controversy is one of the greatest songs Prince ever did IMO.

2. WHEN YOU WERE MINE - SEXUALITY I like When You Were Mine but it was never a favorite. Sexuality though is 'Classic Prince' material to me.

3. DO IT ALL NIGHT - DO ME BABY Both songs are great so it was hard to choose but Do Me Baby is something like the blueprint of his later slow jams.

4. GOTTA BROKEN HEART AGAIN - PRIVATE JOY Easy choice for me, I never enjoyed Private Joy a lot. It is a bit to cheesy/happy musically for me. Gotta Broken Heart Again is just a gorgeous song. I love the reworked live version Prince did during the ONA tour.

5. UPTOWN - RONNIE TALK TO RUSSIA Well, Ronnie Talk To Russia is just a piece of shit in my opinion. Uptown has a great groove and a great vibe and wins easily for me.

6. HEAD - LET'S WORK This was the toughest call, Head is just slightly funkier (if even possible!) than Let's Work IMO.

7. SISTER - ANNIE CHRISTIAN Both great songs, but Annie Christian is something special, I love the vibe and the guitar in this song.

8. PARTYUP - JACK U OFF Like Private Joy the song Jack U Off is a bit to cheesy/happy musically for me. So Party Up wins hands down for me.

Yeah, those would be my choices too.

DM is the more widely recognized classic record due to its overall sound, but Controversy has more great songs on it.

Over the years I've come to favour Controversy over DM. It seems that Prince was also fond of Controversy's overall vibes and kept reusing ideas from it.

This was very hard as Dirty Mind and Controversy are both excellent albums with genre defining songs. These albums are the first true genius level works from Prince. Dirty Mind is incredible the whole way through, and Controversy starts off even stronger, but loses steam near the end.

Dirty Mind is a better album, but Controversy is still excellent too, and the first 3 tracks of Controversy outstrip anything on Dirty Mind. But as far as consistent quality and shock value go, Dirty Mind prevails. I think anyone getting into Prince, needs both of these albums.
