Versions of unreleased tracks that are better then released versions

Probably been done before but I listened to versions #3 & #4 (from ivault) of Computer blue yesterday and couldn't help but think they were way better than the album version which for me has been massively watered down.

Really hope these versions make the PR deluxe.

Endorphinmachine - I suppose it did get a kind of release, but it should have been on the album proper.

Oh and to answer the question: all of them! All of the songs mentioned so far, yes the original version was better than the released one. What was it with Prince that he just couldn't leave his songs alone after recording them... Well, I sort of understand... With any creative work, it's hard to call it "finished". You're always thinking, "what if I do this, what if I change that..." But if you work too long on something, you can ruin it. That's what happened to Extra Loveable.

I don't know about "better" - but this is definitely one of my favorite alternative takes.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Funny, I like the re-invented version of Extra Loveable much better, I was always bored by the original outtake.

But I think he over did "Elephants and FLowers" for sure.

I do think his re-vamp if "Irresistible Bitch" was also better then the original (if that came first), although the original is cool and harsh.

I also think most people here prefer his revamped "We Can Funk" than the original, but most people get mixed up and don't know that the released album version is a remix of the original, and the famous bootleg version that was part of a song sequence was a complete re-recording in the same way he completely re-recorded Extra Loveable.

Joy in Repetition is exactly the same is it not? It was originally in a similar segue on the Crystal Ball Album (from The Ball) and on Graffitti Bridge it is missing a little of the very very end since "Love Machine" just kicks in.

When you list it in this thread, what aspect of it are you thinking of?

Its the same recording, but with the much longer intro, that really helped to set the song up.

Shockedelicus

We Can Funk is the king of ruined Prince songs. The unreleased versions are dense, aggressive, catchy. The released version is toothless.

You know, the version that was on the interactive game (I think??) - much much better than the released version on the gold experience biggrin

No, I never heard that version, but I did hear the song in concert before it was released. Just like The Question of U or Damn U or Sexy MF... And it's pretty hard for the album version to live up to the concert version...

Adorecream

Agree with pretty much all so far.

No one has mentioned my favourite though

.

Screams of Passion (The Family do not compare to the Revolution and Prince telling Brownmark how to use his bass pedal lol)

Feel U up - the late 1981 version runs rings around the "polished" 1989 version. Also this song is a perfect transistional Controversy/1999 sound!

All Day all night (Any protege song is a Prince mix)

G spot

Screams of Passion

Martika's Kitchen (Prince doing Martika's voice is hilarious)

Baby U're a trip

Strange Relationship (Sounds even better with the sitars)

We can funk (Any of versions 1 to 7 recorded in 1986)

Old friends for sale (The original 1985 version is unreleased)

Wouldn't u love 2 love me (1978 version is very good)

Neon Telephone (I think it ended up on some Paisley park album in the late 80s - apologies if it wasn't)

Tick Tick Bang (See comments for Feel U up, Prince has the Linns and a 1999 feel, but with very Dirty Mind/Controversy lyrics and singing)

Elephants and flowers, a slowed down version with a stronger guitar line and different lyrics (More sexual)

Soul Psychodelicide (The song is 5.52 long, not a year and it had the genesis of Joy in Repetition)

.

And I will think of more

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
