I'm literally talking physical access to the tapes themselves. I don't follow the family stuff too closely but anytime I take a glance it's just an ongoing shitshow. Maybe it's all sorted and professionals are busy archiving everything and it's all running smoothly.

Which would mean that the tracklist provided to us here is a massive disappointment.

.
I highly doubt WB or any other company had access to the actual tapes in Paisley Park's Vault(s) by the time this deluxe set had to be finalised for a June release. Possibly still no-one has started cataloging the Vault at this stage.

Some industry guys might have been shown the Vault but probably told no touchy.

So I assume that whatever will be included in the deluxe release, WB either already had (either analog or digital) duplicates of from long ago, or it has been given to them by Prince in recent years.

I just can't imagine the estate's legal affairs being that clear by the end of 2016 that would've allowed them to start working on cataloging the Vault(s) and allowing Warners access to the tapes themselves. Think about it: preparing this release would've meant either transferring the stereo masters to digital inside Paisley's own studio (don't know if the studio itself is staffed at all at this time), or letting WB people take those tapes. Both unlikely before the estate's legal proceedings are finished and clear.

(And btw, if I was running Paisley Park I wouldn't allow any tapes or photos or any other original material leave the building, ever. Everything would be digitised in-house.)

[Edited 3/6/17 1:53am]

yeah this was pretty much what I meant. There could be piles more stuff from that era sitting in Paisley Park that WB has no access to.

This release is hard to gauge. It depends on if its just what Prince submitted to WB or if they felt like adding to it, since Prince's death. Since they called in Susan Rogers into this after Prince's death, im suspect. I'm not really sure if Prince would of handed in the 3/17/84 version of "Possessed". If he did, would he edited it ala "Crystal Ball" style. That version is a different beast when compared to the 83 version. "Demonic Lust". Curious. I think the "17 days (extended)" is a sure thing. Its not really extended. It's just the full recording.

I'd be delighted about that, pretty much all my favourite extended versions are just that; some of his early to mid 80's extended (as opposed to full) versions are a bit hamfisted, albeit enjoyable, to my ears.

Prince's quote at the time in 2014 was "it's just the same album" which implied but didn't say straight out that there were no bonus tracks.

If it leaks before release (even by a few days) I'll "steal" (download) it.

Then I'll BUY the most deluxe version available on release date... wink

If you and SomeSoldier both steal it, but then buy it, then you guys will owe me the French Fries and a Coke, respectively.

I'm going to get a full meal out of this!

Well, you're wrong.

I buy every single Prince release, yet, for well over a decade they have all leaked online days or even weeks before they were released. When that happens I always download the illegal pre-release and that never stops me from showing up Day 1 to purchase a physical copy for my collection. Even when there is little reason to buy like with 4Ever. Still bought it.

So, "doubt" all you want. wink

If I'm going to buy a legitimate release anyway then I'll refrain from downloading it beforehand. I can wait. And it makes the actual purchase mean that much more to me.

I do so all the time. Release dates are functions of marketing - if I can hear a record early, I will. Chances are I've already pre-ordered the LP, or I pick it up on release day.

Sure, listen to it. But I will remain forever doubtful that anyone downloads a full album, decides they like it, and then purchases what they already have stolen.

About the only way I can see that happening are those few people who are going to buy a physical copy (LP usually) because they actually collect stuff.

Sadly, no. But it is in the possession of some 'elite' collectors; therefore it is no rarer than, say, the average Blast from the Past x.x material at this point, which is likely the case for most of what is documented from the studio on PrinceVault. It's said to have an 'All Day, All Night'-ish spoken-rather-than-sung before breaking into the chrous approach to the vocals. It's also been alleged in Possessed, of all places, if I recall the source correctly, that P plays the harp on the song, but I believe it is the DX7, which he had just received a few weeks before (and inaugurates into his musical world on 'Love and Sex' and 'When Doves Cry'). It profits greatly from its close proximity in recording time to WDC (about 16 days later) in its wickedly effected/flanged Linn programming; he was still in the moment.

.

Well to be clear - most of the time the only way to hear something early is to download the leak (yes, there are advance streams, but very few of the artists I follow participate in those).

Color me suspect.

The lack of the "string and keys only" version of Purple Rain on that track listing is distressing. I want that in HQ so bad.

Presuming the PR rehearsal is the Aug3 83 version, forget that. That version is pretty ho-hum and Prince's solo is pretty uninspired and meandering (which makes the final one that night all the more impressive!!!).

Huh? What do you mean "sadly, no" and then saying it's no rarer than stuff on Blast From The Past?

It's out there. I have it.

If it's on boot comps like that, then it's circulating, right?
