Oscars - In Memoriam (Prince etc)

I don't know where to put this.

Prince was mentioned in the intro by Jennifer Aniston before the video. And they're using a Joni Mitchell song, "Both Sides, Now", that uses the phrase "ice cream castles".

I hate that we're still having these moments over so many greats lost in 2016.

She mentioned "from a prince that took us on a revolution...to a princess that helped save the galaxy", or something to that effect. She also got choked up about Bill Paxton dying yesterday.

Me neither. Not tonight for some reason.

I use to get quite excited about the Oscar ceremony, but its been a massive turn off the last few years. Something incredibly smug about the whole thing now I find.

Having said that the 'in memoriam' section is always done with a lot of class and it was done really well this year. Would have been nice if they'd used a Prince song but Sara Bareilles did a fantastic job with 'Both Sides Now'.

Lovely that they actually showed a clip of Prince rather than just his picture ... they showed the 'I'd like to dedicate this to my father' moment from Purple Rain. Got me going again sad sad

Can someone explain why they used that quote? Don't get it.

I'd assume it was just done to highlight a particularly emotional scene from the movie so as to fit the tone of the video package. Though how cool would it have been had they played the clip of him performing Darling Nikki?

I know they mentioned him before the video played, but surely they could have added Bill Paxton into the video montage. Even just a short clip at the end would have been enough.

Emotional resonance I'm guessing. That's the point of the film where The Kid accepts (partly) what his father was and did, or at least understands, but knows that he's strong enough now not to end up like him (see the turmoil in the basement where he pictures himself hanging from the rafters). Its a sad but triumphant moment. Plus its the intro to what some would say is the greatest song he ever wrote.

And they couldn't really play a musical clip over the top of Bareilles singing.

Maybe I'm cynical but I think the only reason they used that audio was because it resembles an Oscar acceptance speech.

I did love the song choice and she killed it - not just for Prince, but we know he loved Joni. rose

Didn't watch the In Memoriam until this morning. For some reason, I was in my feelings all day Saturday, and was just now coming down from the 'grief fest' on Sunday. I thought it was kind, simple. But I'm ready for all the Memoriams with P included to be done.

Welcome home class. We've come a long way. - RIP Prince

The clip of Prince could have been way longer. When I watched it on my tv, I missed it, that is how quick it disappeared!
