I have emailed the artist (Doug Henders) with your question and now waiting for an anwer.
I've already had a few email exchanges with him before and his response time is usually pretty fast.

It'd be interesting to hear, but I'd assume he still owns it. I remember the story being something like Prince came to see it, albeit unfinished, said he liked it, and that was the last he heard from Prince.

By the way, there are Polaroids or photos of Susannah, Sheila, and Wendy in various clothes & poses (including Warren himself with a guitar) that Warren used as inspiration and as models. Wendy as the old woman crying, Sheila in her pose we see on the regular album painting, the violin girl pose w/ Susannah, and Warren sat w/ a guitar mimicking the image of the guy with the cloud guitar.

Other images used were Renee Adore (movie star):

Clara Bow (also mentioned in "Condition of the Heart")

^This is not Doug Henders' painting, it is Jim Warren's. Prince had contacted Warren first then went with Henders who did the final artwork used on the cover.

edit: I prefer the painted version (the alternate one) to the one that was used. The ATWIAD cover art always felt ameturish, stiff and sloppy.

Doug Henders just got back to me and said that as far as he knows, the original painting is in the possession of Prince's estate.
