First up all of the asshats on this thread. Apparently it takes longer to ignore a thread than to make a snarky comment about how this thread sucks. It is these people and not "dubious" threads that will kill the org deader than the Purple one.

I think this theory has legs. It is the sin of the industry that creates the "temptation" that will destroy the Prince. I feel that Nikki is as much of a victim as Prince.

Prince is being tempted and destroyed by the sin of lustful, loveless sex that has him enthralled.

Nikki is destroying herself by being a groupie. Ultimaltely she will be destroyed by her greed and lust for fame and money. The film paralells these in how Prince sees Apollonia in her seeking Morris Day's help and how Francis L, no doubt distrusts his wife with any man.

It is powerful symbolically to see Nikki as a demon (a succubus) to take Prince's soul and talent. I however prefer to see it as a sin borne inside of humans. A honey trap set once the original sin was committed. The industry will consume people, and lust, greed and distrust of each other will wither the souls of those tainted by this pain. This is what it sounds like when doves cry means inherently loving people hurting those they love. The worst pain.

Please not this is not written from an evangelical or spirtual bent personally. I am just looking at how the images are presented, and creating an interpretation, more from a literature perspective.

It interests me when Prince spoke about trolley cars that juggle 17 as in tamborine or the lyrics of sexuality We live in a world overrun by tourists
Tourists - 89 flowers on their back...inventors of the Accu-jack
They look at life through a pocket camera... What? No flash again?
They're all a bunch of double drags who teach their kids that Love is bad
Half of the staff of their brain is on vacation
Mama, are u listening?

Prince liked people that leapt for meaning (or even looked for the ladder) even if we occassionally fell on our butts.

falloff

Once again. No input into the conversation. Why don't you move on?

I was reading fan fiction a few weeks ago and one of the authors has an interesting point in the story.

Was Darling Nickie about a loose women or was the song really about the music industry/devil?

A couple of things to keep in mind.

Nikki lives in a castle= Do most loose women/hookers live in lavish homes? Could this be the devil's den or a corporate building?

Sign on the dotted line.-- Do most guys have to sign a contract when they are with a women? You do have to sign a contract with a record lable or a contract with the devil.

This song would have been a good way of Prince mixing the music industry/loose women/ deal with the devil all togther in one song as the road to hell.

Discuss if you like I have always been interested in Prince as a song writer and what he may have really meant as to what we actually think from the first listen. Remember "Let's Go Crazy" is about trying to escape from the devil.

The official version is that Nicoletta was the name of the girl in the original Purple Rain script. He only changed it to Apollonia when she was cast.

In my view, the song is Old Nick and his S and M tendencies.

The OP's interpretation of the song is perfectly sensible. Regardless of whether you agree with her or not, it's utterly stupid to ridicule her for it. Analysing lyrics should be one of the key ingredients to a good fan forum, but here on the Org certain users will always write off that kind of thing as crackpot conspiracy theories or the ravings of a madman. I know it's only a minority, but this particular brand of anti-intellectualism (for want of a better word) is still annoying.

DN lyrics are concrete and doesnt call for analysis. Maybe the song Purple Rain does, yes. Dont speak of anti-intellectualism when you are trying to defend 'fan fiction' of Darling Nikky. I mean Nikie. That brand of anti-intellectualism is what's annoying. But I realize I need to understand that not everyone is capable of intellectual discussion when it comes to Prince. I admit part of my ego expects others to be able to and when they can't or don't, it is frustrating. Frustrating because it seems to relegate the greatest musician of our time to grade school fandom instead of the respect he deserves.

I'll try to have a better outlook from here on out. I apologize.

Some rather vocal members of this community like to peddle the idea that Prince was a simpleton that didn't reach any level of sophistication without the help from certain band members. It follows from this that DN having been written and recorded by Prince alone doesn't "call for analysis".

Your head is so large I wonder how you make it into a room. Get over yourself.

We are not talking about any grade school so maybe we should be questioning your intellect.

Oh I realize I spelled the title wrong because I was typing this on my phone but because it is bugging you I am not going to change it. Maybe it will make you go away and find something else to do rather then derail this topic. Now back to the discussion.

"I think that this song is an intentional jab at the Moral Majority. I don't feel that this song is about having sex with a hooker. In truth, I believe that Nikki is the Devil. Old Nick is one of Satan's nicknames. The singer signs on the dotted line to seal the contract on his soul. What he is selling it for is unknown - maybe just an amazing sexual experience? However, "my body will never be the same," makes me think that he sells his soul for some physical change or attribute, and that the sex is either a bonus to the actual transformation, or else a a metaphor for the change.

The use of the word "castle" indicates one of royalty (Satan being the leader of hell), and to tempt people, there is everything that money could buy.

His head is spinning, not knowing what he's in store for - this is a hallmark of the individual that undergoes a transformation.

Her love will kick your behind - she'll show no mercy --- could be attributes of Satan.

The backmasking at the end? Certainly a wink at religious zealots who claim that rock is evil, and that Satan hides messages in backwards lyrics. In this case, Prince laughs at them by telling them what they already believe - that The Lord is coming soon.

The word grind makes me think, though. Rather than being a euphemism for sex, I wonder if the word GRIND is using the definition "WORK" -- The Devil works His magic...."

I've always thought this song was about selling your soul to the devil. Interesting, I didn't know that would be a controversial interpretation.

Complete drivel, mods lock this shit. Prince was not a devil worshipper or a satanist. True satanists like myself are sick of being lumped in with the devil and devil worshipping. The devil is a Christian construct, to acknowledge it, is to acknowledge Christianity.

.

Satanism is about perprtual indulgence through sex, lust, joy, food andother indulgences. It ahs nothing to do with devil worship or sacrificing children/virgins/animals etc to the Devil.

.

Also the song is called Darling Nikki, not Nickie - can the o/p read or duz the presyden Adolf Dumpf do that for hur?.

.

Cockamamie is how that word is spelled. We should have a compulsory IQ test that eliminates people with IQ's of below 90 from posting here.

I see it more as anger at some of his fans, the ones giddy over him because of his looks and sexy dancing and some of his sexy antics. He wanted to get their attention with sex then (maybe) communicate a deeper message, but some fans just didn't let up. Darling Nikki may have been a way to say "all you want is sex? Here's some sex mother fuckers". The hotel lobby full of horny girls and boys out of control might have pissed him off at some point, so he got sarcastic and dealt with his anger that way.
