Since You've Been Gone, Babe: Arms of Orion appreciation thread

Prince does Burt Bacharach. Beautiful vocals and piano. Yeah its schmatlzy but still has alot of Princisms.

Bring on the hate!

I never understood why "The Arms of Orion" got such hate, yet other lesser songs get a pass.

I love TAOO. I play it on the piano, and it's actually my warm-up song a lot of times. It's got a couple of sharps in it, it has a great run of chords in certain parts.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Its just cool to trash it on here for some dumb reason.

I've also loved this song too. I don't think Prince's voice sounds quite the same on other track.

Great song. I never understood all the hate for it. The vocals are great and Sheen Easton sounds wonderul. I'm a biig fan of this song and not ashamed to admit it.

i hate this fucking song. the b-side is far superior and deserves a standalone rather than backing this crappy pap.

i'll see myself out.

Another "bad" Prince song I'm supposed to hate, that I love. Great melody, great vocals, and symphony outro is one of the best classical moments of his career.

I wrote a song years ago, that I think I still have a horrible demo of somewhere (this dates to like 1994). I used the opening 4 chords and hook of "I Love U In Me" as the bridge to my song. It was uptempto, so not immediately noticeable. But when I was writing it, it just seemed like a natural progression, so I went with it.

I've always found the inclusion of "Arms of Orion" on Batman strange. Why wasn't "I Love U In Me" the track 3 ballad? It's lower, funkier and more immediate, just like the rest of the album. I don't dislike Arms of Orion. I can't blame a track for being cheesy when it shares an LP with "Batdance," but it does sort of bring the album to a halt after two moody, slammin' openers.

Listened to it yesterday for the first time in years and surprised how much I enjoyed it. Would fit perfectly into a Disney film like Beauty and the Beast

Arms of Orion works because it shows Prince could even do the treacly movie love ballad genre well. His being so conventional on this song was actually unconventional for him, and I always loved it when he surprised me.,

I love this song, especially the vocals. Plus, I have especially fond memories of that time, the very late 80's, so that probably plays into my love for this song.

It's a masterpiece. Like a few others, I'm mystified at the hate it gets. Sure, the song is 'simple', but many great songs are (Alphabet St?), and the vocal performance is anything but. It has that supercool sound Prince used on ballads during that era - quite the trio with Scandalous and I Love U In Me. I can only assume the hate is due to the lyrics and Easton.

Prince's own vocal contribution is beautiful, overlooked, and as complex as the song is simple. Just listen to the crazy choices he makes whilst hiding behind Easton's plain delivery. If you can, tune out the music and Sheena, and just listen to what Prince is doing on those first two choruses. Nuts! He's all over the show. It would be quite something to hear it on its own. And it works!

I love the whole song, but especially that instrumental section at the end.

.

I always felt that IF there had been a VIDEO for this song, it would've boosted it far beyond the minor Top 40 hit that it was. And also if it had been used in the 'Batman' movie.

.

I've spent too much time over the years trying to comprehend the hate for this song. I seems so vehement. For whatever reason, THIS song was deemed "universally acceptable" to absolutely despise, no matter how die-hard a Prince fan you are.

.

It's gorgeous!

.

I think a lot of people are turned off by the tone/style of Easton's vocal and that clouds the overall opinion of the song itself??? I think she IS putting emotion into it, but perhaps a less "square" delivery might've been better received...

By no means an inherently negative thing... Look at how many Disney songs have become standards.
