And here we go....

I just got onto the computer- perusing the Prince Org and hear "Nothing Compare's To You," being sung on t.v. by teenagers--- I look up, like WTF? and it's a commericial for Google something or other..... neutral sad

That commercial aired during the Grammy ceremony (right after Bruno Mars' Prince tribute). I thought it was a pretty touching and well-done commercial.

Well, just my opinion, but I didn't. It seemed like a sellout to me. And we all know that Prince very much guarded his music and I'm not so sure that he would like it. As far as being "touched" I see that's what they were going for but a bunch of hipsters singing Prince's song does not do anything for me.

If you want Prince's music to live on, new fans must be recruited. Despite rumors, those were not all random hipsters. Brandi Carlile and others are singing in the ad.

The estate needs money to pay the huge tax bill.
It's respectful, as are the Spotify ads.
There is only one person who can be blamed: the one who didn't want to think about wills and trusts.
Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

A big Yes to this opinion. In addition, I'll say that it commercializes Prince, rather than how I'm hoping his music will be heard.
Sometimes over the long run, it's better to let this happen slowly.

I thought the renditions were poor but don't onject to Prince's music being used in adverts. The more people get to hear it the better I say.

RIP sad

It is respectful and I might have been being bitchy - if so I apologize. And I have no fucking idea who Brandi Carlile is confused And really, that's my point. Prince is PRINCE and only Prince (or someone known and VERY WORTHY) should sing his songs. Only one fan's opinion. confused

Me either! Is that the best they could get to sing a Prince song?!

I thought the tribute was cool, especially if just real people singing. I wish they would have done something like that for the Grammy tribute instead of the Purple Rain Karaoke. confused

I understand.

Maybe it will help if people think of it this way: the ad portrayed young people singing "naturally" like they knew and loved the song. It makes it seem hip to be a fan of his music (something WE always knew!)

We have to open our arms wide and embrace the new fans, even if we don't like their music. The more they listen to P, the more their music will grow and be enriched.
